TMAU VET Team

Got a chance to talk to Texas Veterinary Emergency Team PIO Angela Clendenin at the International Disaster Conference & Expo in New Orleans.

(In my best Texas voice) This particular team is fixin to deploy out with Texas Task Force-1 to support the K9 teams that operate during disasters. They also support the animals that are found during the disasters too.

Additionally, their 4th year residents deploy out with the teams. This active deployment allows them to gain real disaster experience and support others in a challenging environment.

I wish I had these kinds of teams when we were operating during Hurricane Katrina/Rita in Louisiana’s Lower 9th Ward (St. Bernard Parish).

While not really recognized by FEMA as a support team, this kind of thinking outside of the box is a great example of how emergency management professionals are truly encompassing the All-Hazards approach to disaster response.
