My #Squad

2018 Master Public Information Officer #SquadGoals
Happy Aloha Friday everyone!
Sat in on our agency-wide town hall meeting w/ Administrator Brock Long.

Great to see him address all the crowds at FEMA after a historic year of disasters across the country including a few new programs for 2018. Yes, I am proud to work for this agency.
On the townhall, we had teams in Texas, Headquarters, and Puerto Rico briefing out including FEMA Deputy Administrator Daniel Kaniewski here with us at EMI.

Glad to see him and hear about the updates on how we will change our preparedness efforts.

As a country, we have lots of work to do to get us to a higher level of preparedness.
Day-4 with the Advanced PIO class here at FEMA Emergency Management Institute!
Lots to see and do esp w/ the lack of social media and the huge increase in EAS Alerts for public warning.

Also had a visit from the Governor of Columbia aka Maryland’s EM PIO Ed McDonough.

Great to see that partnership between local, county, and state agencies all working toward a Federal Declaration.

Quick visit from the USFA Administrator…

…and no, the pressers didn’t stop. We used this as a teaching moment. Just because a disaster is ongoing, life does not stop for VIP visits!
Solid day with everyone from the APIO and MPIO class.
Day-3 of the Advanced PIO course and today, we see some structure!
No doubt there was going to be some stuff on ICS forms because we got some…

…ICS-215s forms for the win!
And of course more interviews because evacuation and shelter information is super important. So bring on the interviews!

And yes, it’s not easy being green!
BTW-human with pet sheltering is totes important so make sure you know exactly what kind of message you want to pass on.
Lots of work on camera esp focusing in on joint press conferences…

…and of course solid reporter questions too.

#WeWearPinkOnWednesdays
At the end of the class, MPIOs initiated a panel discussion with Rita and I on public information.

Yep, an unfiltered look into PIO stuff for anyone. We as PIOs should not remain silent.
I am convinced that we are to share knowledge and enhance other PIO’s skills. Because “a rising tide raises all ships” right?

Day-2 of the Master PIO class….back at it with all the Advanced PIOs.

Lots of distractions in class…

But that’s all just part of the PIO job. Filter and prioritize!
Listening and learning from the years of experience in this class is just one part of the training.

Reporting live from EMI’s famous S-building…
Starting out the Advanced PIO class week with the big cheese – a warm EMI welcome from the new FEMA EMI Deputy Superintendent Steve Heidecker!

My buddy!
Phil laying down the usual ground rules like…

And yes, today, I was fortunate enough to introduce my favorite Indianapolis Fire Department Batt Chief/PIO Extraordinaire….Ladies and Gents….put your hands together for BC Rita Reith!!!!!

Glad to see so many of my former students come here to FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute for more training. And they get to hear my same PIO instructor jokes again.

PC: Cody McDonell
And great to meet so many of online peeps for the very first time aka #IRL. Yes of course there will be lots of tweeting and #hastagging going on this week.

You in my class? Holla yo!

Are you attending the State of Ohio 2018 EMA Spring Emergency Management Director’s Conference?

Sooooo, is this like a winter condom for your fire hydrant?

Glow in the dark reflective so you can find it better in the dark!!!
I love the extra effort people make to support their local fire department.
#SafetySur approves!
“I want to outline some logistics for tomorrow. Exempt employees will continue to work a normal work schedule; albeit, the work conducted may be different than their typical day-to-day activities.” -Eric
Government – get it together please.
Day-2 of HSEEP.
Lots of discussion on writing solid Objectives….ahem, SMART Objectives.

SMART Objectives peeps!!!
SMART objectives will immensely help your evaluators monitor your participants’ actions during any exercise.
It is always fun to lay the ground work for one of the most influential and critical courses in Emergency Management.

Just cause the sun goes down, doesn’t mean Emergency Management stops…..24/7 EM Pros are ready to support any emergency or disaster.
I’d suggest all of you take the FEMA E/L-146 Homeland Security Exercise Evaluation Program (HSEEP) and take it with your local, county, state, and Federal partners.
Teamwork will always lead you to success.
