As Emergency Management professionals, we constantly need to think outside the box. We are faced with challenging situations and are forced to to conjure up creative solutions for our community.

I’d encourage many of you to reach out to your non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as they can be a great resource in solving complex problems for all of our communities. Building these relationships before a disaster or emergency will pay off three fold as you help your community rebuild. In the end, we need all of our communities to be self sustaining and more resilient.

Additionally, you yourself should consider donating items to their efforts. These organizations are primarily funded by donations from generous people like you.

Hello terrible weather! Today the weather sucks. I’d encourage you to reference your local National Weather Service Office (NWS) for more detailed information.

Wet weather make driving conditions poor…esp with low visibility for everyone. So you can imagine that the combination of rain, slick roads, and poor drivers make it tough on any motorist.

Good safety messages include a simple one that people forget. When it’s raining, TURN YOUR DAMN HEALIGHTS ON!!

This simple action allows other vehicles to identify your position and plan accordingly while driving. Simple and easy action that could actually save lives.

Additionally high winds make it difficult for semi trucks or other high profile vehicles to operate and increase the risk of  getting blown over while driving at high speeds on the open highways.

Whether alongside or behind, keep a sizable distance and watch closely as you pull up along side.

Also – don’t text and drive. You might die.

Great to see soooooo many familiar faces here at thee 2017 Association of Floodplain Managers’ Annual conference in Kansas City.

Love that more agencies are using social media for not only preparedness, but also response and recovery.

Our class today? We have a good mix from 21 states across the US including a NOAA Director and FEMA HQ leadership.
