Disaster assistance at a school? Sure thing!

We were requested to support an event at Ponciana School mainly for all the parents and families in Key West.

So….we are in. FEMA PIO Kevin Sur onscene!

Our hope is that we conduct numerous events in communities to help answer questions about disaster assistance.

We have multilingual people who go out with our teams and help translate Spanish, Creole, Haitian, etc…and we have hardware and locations that meet the needs of the access and functional needs population at all of our Disaster Recovery Centers.

We even have flyers and informational materials in Chinese, French, Vietnamese, etc….

Sometimes, people are confused and are not sure if you should apply. Here’s a tip: Apply.

Our staff is ready to help. No matter what language, apply for disaster assistance. The sooner the better.

Reminder to heed to local #school buses #kids

Since so many kiddos are headed back to school (this week and next week) that it’s probably a good reminder for everyone to heed to local school buses in neighborhoods.

Y-forSchoolBuses

We must all do our part in keeping safety at the forefront of our daily activities.

Abide by all rules and be mindful of kids.

@rusnivek

When a school bus flashes it’s red lights…

Please stop when a school bus is flashing red lights.

Y-forSchoolBuses

As you can see, kids will dart across the roadway without looking.

I don’t care if you are in your small car, minivan, truck, ambulance or fire truck – kids don’t understand traffic laws.

For the sake of kids’ safety – please abide by the rules of the road around school buses.

Bioterrorism discussion at IIT in Chicago

This past weekend, I was invited to swing by the Illinois Institute of Technology Graduate School in downtown Chicago.

IIT

Spirited discussion included bioterrorism, social media data/intelligence, explosives, nuc/rad release, mass panic/evacuation, and of course drone operations for large events.

taste-of-chicago

Participants included many members of Chicago Police’s upper administration and leadership from Chicago Police specialty teams.

They asked Dr. Fagel if I was a Special Agent kinda guy. Clearly, my Aloha shirt on a Saturday really messed things up.

Tower

Overall, it was a great day to be in downtown Chicago.

Looking forward to sharing some SME knowledge with the graduate students this fall.

YikYak now allows pictures! VoteUp right?

Breaking news: YikYak now allows pictures!

YikYak

For those that have not used it, YikYak is a social media mobile app on iOS and Android that allows people to anonymously create and view posts (aka Yaks) within a close proximity of the user. The Yaks that are posted can be voted up or down by other users which will propel them higher on the list of conversational threads. Many college and local high school kids are using this app as a virtual/digital message/corkboard.

Soooooo, is that a good thing or bad thing?

  • Good because pictures always help enhance information gathering.
  • Bad because…well…it’s anonymous pictures.
  • Bad because it’s anonymous.
  • Bad because it’s proximity…which means in order to use YikYak, you have to be close.

I bet you are thinking YikYak is all just fun petty stuff. But before you think it’s all just a playful game, think about the potential of menacing/bullying. Now think about it from the law enforcement side where we need to track anonymously posted information for evidence.

Ride the Yak.

Time is valuable, so Yak good stuff.

“And so my fellow Americans… #JFK

Little known fact about me: On every trip I make to DC, I always pay my respects at Arlington to a great leader.

Let JFK’s full quote inspire you to serve this great country…as well as this world.
