Cleveland Hopkins ARFF Crisis Communications meeting today

Spent the morning with my friends at Cleveland Hopkins Airport Crash Fire Rescue.

Finished a short briefing. Preparing for some crisis communications training upcoming and giving interview tips as well as a short bit on social media.

Excited to see old familiar faces and of course one of my former Lt under my command, Chupacabra himself, Morales.

Excited for training w/ all shifts and stations.

Definitely excited to support a great organization.

PIO Training focused on crisis communications and social media

Glad to be back in southern Ohio teaching some Public Information Officers from the local areas on crisis communications and social media.

Shared some new materials and had a long discussion on emerging social media platforms. Surprisingly, it seemed that SnapChat has really caught the interest of several participants.

Over the course of two days, we reviewed numerous national media interviews including specific cases that occurred in Ohio.

Also got a chance to show success stories like Cleveland’s #CJSavesCLE program from December 2015.

Working through tabletop exercises, we sectioned the group to address crisis interviews, social media posts, on scene PIO reporting, and press release writing.

Crisis interviews went well utilizing the 3-point system.

Because of the speed and layers of approvals, press releases were not voted the favorite way to communicate with the general public.

However, participants enjoyed crisis interviews part of the training.

Sharpened PIO skills by doing some on scene self-reporting.

By formulating tweets prior to an incident (pre-scripted social media posts) allows primary agencies to focus on other tactical / operational objectives.

But providing high quality timely video reports from the scene will allow the local PIO to have total control over the message going out and support the media’s needs before they arrive on scene.

Mitigating hostile interviews are a just another part of a PIO’s duties. Pivoting and bridging are just a few ways to change direction during a media interview.

Even experimented/worked on the selfie-stick self-reporting onscene interview. Nice work Chief!

Pretty good for his first time with a selfie-stick for scene reporting!

Since we were all concentrating, I figured it would be a good time for a funny picture. (Apparently) I *might have only said that in my mind.

I had a great time with everyone in class.

Now use your new PIO powers for good.

And use your new found social media skillz to better your community.

Most importantly, Happy #AlohaFriday everyone!

Another great Ohio EMA Basic #PIO course at Independence Fire

Great Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) class with so many brand new Public Information Officers (PIOs).

Special thanks to Fire Chief Steve Rega and Assistant Fire Chief Wheeler and all of Independence Fire for hosting this great all-hazard course.

Oh you know me. Just doing my share reppin Ohio EMA…

…in helping everyone understand EOC Operations and the importance of a Joint Information Center (JIC) that regularly engages on social media.

Additionally, I love pushing the classic Emergency Management mantra of getting everyone to work together BEFORE an incident is a hallmark of sucess.

Bonus, I got to hang with one of my favorite PIOs – Erica Creech (aka Mama PIO)!

I can’t wait to work with so many of you in the near future.

June = 3 regions and 18 classes

June will be packed as I jam numerous classes in the Midwest while prepping for upcoming large events in Ohio.

First week I’ll be hitting it hard with an Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) ICS-300 class at the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. Then busting out my best PIO moves for an OEMA Basic PIO course at Independence Fire Department. Thursday and Friday I’ll be at the southern most tip hanging with the pros from Washington County Ohio on a PIO/Crisis class and TableTop Exercise (TTE). Lots of important Ohio peeps attending courses. Love it!

Second week: I be hanging with the Cincinnati crews at an All-Hazards’ PIO course, then teaching a Joint Information Center (JIC) class at the EOC. On Friday, I’ll slide on over to Kentucky to deliver another social media course w/ Emory. A twofer with 5 and 4.

Third week I’ll be in Nebraska teaching crisis communications and social media. Region-7 baby!

Fourth week I’ll be speaking again at the National Floodplain Manager’s Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Back in Region-5!!!

Fifth week I’ll head out to Region 4 again in Mississippi to evaluate a few new instructor candidates.

Busy month. Not much time for error.

But I got this. Bring it June!

ICS-300 course at CCBH

Kicking off the week strong with a State of Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) ICS-300 class at the Cuyahoga County Board of Heath.

At the Cuyahoga County Board of Health

One of our smaller classes, this particular class has a fairly diverse participant background including a few out-of-state folks too.

I’ve known Doug and Jay for years. In fact, Jay used to fly on MedEvac! Small world huh.

Incidentally, Jay said I inspired him to do more Emergency Management teaching. I am humbled by the compliment. Trust me, I’m super excited for Jay.

Numerous agencies shared great ideas and thought about solutions outside the box that could be useful to some public safety agencies before and during a disaster.

Sharing and collaborating ideas is a hallmark trait of emergency management

Since we were at the county health department, I was able to catch up to Rebecca – one of my former colleagues on the UASI Committee I used to co-chair.

All smiles!

Likely, with the upcoming events, will be spending a lot more time together in the Joint Information Center (JIC).

Let’s get exited peeps!

Encourage our youth to do anything

Not only with words, we must inspire and encourage our youth to do more.

Advancing the hoseline with a bunch of my new Firefighters.

Open eyes and open doors. We must provide them the tools and experiences to do anything. Allow them to dream for real.

Share your experiences. They can learn a great deal from professionals.

Because our kids are our future.
