My favorite course today in Nevada

Hump day was a fun day spending time teaching my most favorite course – PER-344: Social Media Tools & Techniques!

Special thanks to the State of Nevada Emergency Management Homeland Security for hosting this class for PIOs/PAOs from Nevada and California.

Lots to discuss including augmented reality and real-time actionable information for SA/COP.

Listen closely to so called “experts” – many of them talk noise. Anyone can look and analyze noise. The real social media pros can distill social media information into actionable information for tactical operations.

Lots of attention needs to be allocated to equipment and how it’s been unsuccessfully AND successfully used in the field.

And yes of course a special shout out to weird gadets like FPV wearable tech in class too. #Spectacles

See, I swear that class with me is super fun.

Packed day here at the State of Nevada Emergency Management Homeland Security’s Emergency Operations Center.

Kicking off another basic social media course for my 34 new PIOs and PAOs.

Great discussion on sharing information and amplifying other agencies’ efforts.

Lots of discussion on the ongoing two concurrrent presidential disaster declarations

Special thanks to State of Nevada Public Information Officer Gail Powell.

Glad to see so many partners in public safety attending today’s no cost training by FEMA / NDPTC.

Looking forward to tomorrow’s class too!

Build and strengthen relationships with NGOs

As Emergency Management professionals, we constantly need to think outside the box. We are faced with challenging situations and are forced to to conjure up creative solutions for our community.

Hanging out with my new peeps at the Salvation Army (North Randall, OH)

I’d encourage many of you to reach out to your non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as they can be a great resource in solving complex problems for all of our communities. Building these relationships before a disaster or emergency will pay off three fold as you help your community rebuild. In the end, we need all of our communities to be self sustaining and more resilient.

Additionally, you yourself should consider donating items to their efforts. These organizations are primarily funded by donations from generous people like you.

Do it today.

Friendly #AlohaFriday reminder: Wipers on = Lights on! #Preparedness

Hello terrible weather! Today the weather sucks. I’d encourage you to reference your local National Weather Service Office (NWS) for more detailed information.

Wet weather make driving conditions poor…esp with low visibility for everyone. So you can imagine that the combination of rain, slick roads, and poor drivers make it tough on any motorist.

Good safety messages include a simple one that people forget. When it’s raining, TURN YOUR DAMN HEALIGHTS ON!!

This simple action allows other vehicles to identify your position and plan accordingly while driving. Simple and easy action that could actually save lives.

Additionally high winds make it difficult for semi trucks or other high profile vehicles to operate and increase the risk of  getting blown over while driving at high speeds on the open highways.

Whether alongside or behind, keep a sizable distance and watch closely as you pull up along side.

Also – don’t text and drive. You might die.

Me Oh My Oh May 2017!

Me Oh My Oh May 2017!

First week I’ll be presenting at the 2017 Association of Floodplain Managers annual conference in Kansas City. Region-7 peeps!

Second week will be in the State of Nevada Emergency Operations Center for a set of social media courses including my favorite PER-344 – Social Media Tools & Techniques! Region-9 baby! Sadly, I will not be attending the National SAA conference.

Third week will be spent teaching ICS-300 in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Who’s excited for Intermediate Incident Command System (ICS) for Expanding Incidents?!?

Fourth week will be spent in southern Ohio in a PIO course with on camera interviews and crisis response exercise.

Trust me, it’s likely going to be a busy tough May.
