Congrats on PGFD’s PIO Mark Brady

Congrats to Prince George County Fire PIO Mark Brady on a well deserved upcoming retirement from decades of service to public safety and PIOs.

I have been fortunate to know and work with Mark over the years in professional circles. Legit nice guy and consummate professional.

When I received this note, I was exhausted from working back-to-back Hurricane Irma/Maria Type-1 Federal disasters for months. Worked to the bone and getting very little sleep, I wasn’t quite sure what was going on.

I am grateful for Mark’s specific note to me. And in PIO classes, I talk frequently about Mark’s actions but when it comes to nurturing/growing PIOs, Mark took the time to check in on my well being and safety. Trust me when I tell you, I needed to see this note.

Related: For those that used Brady EMS books, that would be the same family – so yeah, Mark’s family is a legacy in public safety.

Congrats Mark. Enjoy retirement. Indeed, our paths will cross again. #PIO

Social media and a solar eclipse with my new peeps at Prince George County

Outstanding day yesterday with my Prince George County Emergency Operations Center!

Great new facility to teach and learn. We kicked off our morning with telling our class that they could tweet, FB post, Gram, etc….all DURING class time. And within a few seconds, this happened.

It’s always a fun time when you are in class w/ me.

We also had a few celebrity PIOs in the audience like the famous Prince George County Fire PIO Mark Brady. #famous

@rusnivek and @PGFDPIO

As you know, he also teaches at EMI in the Advanced PIO Course.

Since everyone was hyped up for the solar eclipse, we built a break around the maximum viewing time…and yes, we all wore NASA approved safety glasses to view.

I might have been too excited and tried to teach with them on. Unless you are looking at the sun, you can’t see anything. NASA approved indeed!

Great class and outstanding new partnerships from everyone who attended our social media class. Mahalos to everyone!

Now go forth and use your social media powers for good!

Everyone’s talking about PokemonGo #PG

So far, this is making me feel guilty for abandoning my Second Life personna and my Tomagochi I got as a gift.

Pokemon Go is a free-to-play, GPS based augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic for iOS and Android devices. It was initially released in July 2016. The game allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual Pokemon who appear throughout the real world. Although the game is free-to-play, it supports in-app purchases. (Wikipedia)

Keep in mind, I did not grow up with Pokémon so I don’t think I have quite the attraction/ nostalgia to this game compared to others in the Nintendo targeted 19-34 age bracket.

However, this does show an interesting market shift as virtual reality aka augmented reality starts to integrate into our digital platforms seamlessly through social media. Oh yeah, the geolocation piece of this #gamification is total icing on the cake too.

Be safe and don’t get “lured” into something bad.
