Reporting live from Game-3 NBA Championships #GoCavs!!!!!
As always, follow us Jen and I on Twitter (@CLEpolice) for field #PIO reports on safety here at Game-3!
Teaching my favorite class in Missouri!
Great start to a Tuesday morning teaching my most favorite class: Social Media Tools & Techniques!

Glad to see Emergency Management Director welcoming everyone to the brand new training room.

Participants from all over the state contributed to conversation about new social media tools as well as tactics used for disaster response and recovery.

Particularly glad to see engaged partners sharing info and building relationships IRL (In Real Life) as well as online. Amplification of efforts online can only contribute to the success of agencies in preparedness as well as response and recovery.

Great to see so many familiar faces as well as a bombucha mahalos to all my old and new peeps from Missouri!
It still has the brand new EOC smell!
Oooooooooooo. Yaaassss – it still has that brand new EOC smell!

Kinda like the “new car smell” for Emergency Management.
Bonus points for media parking with prepipped hookups on the opposite side of the parking lot.

Extra bonus points for a measured spot for the FEMA MERS vehicle too (far left parking spots).
Game-2: Let’s #GoCavs !!!!
#PrideInTheCLE on a perfect Saturday in downtown #Cleveland
Solid morning setup with all the public safety pros in Cleveland for Pride Parade today #PrideInTheCLE

Even Charlie Pop is up and taking a look at a few things from above too.

Planned out a few things with one of my favorite PIOs… Cleveland Police Sgt Jennifer Ciaccia!

It’s worth a note that this is the first time the CPD Honor Guard was able to participate and lead the parade.

Everyone should be proud of a city that supports diversity from so many different communities.
Had a chance to see the Cleveland Police Bike Unit out along the parade route.

Adorned with festive flags, Cleveland Police bike unit is there to support the community.
Glad to see law enforcement leadership out amongst the community too. Here’s Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams and members of the bike unit posing for pictures.

Additionally, we caught the mounted unit getting into the party too. Apparently, Red Bull gives you wings. Pegasus!

Police 👮 recruitment table was setup and answering lots of questions from the general public on the upcoming entrance requirements.

Also had a chance to do some interviews with CPD Explosive Detection K9 Benny!

Seriously, we have worked numerous events with them – great team!

Thousands marched along the parade route and then at the entrance to Cleveland Public Square…

…and thousands more met them at downtown public square.

Fun day for everyone downtown!
Special thanks to the field PIO reporting team of Jen and Kevin at #PrideInTheCLE.

Our second year doing field PIO stuff from the parade route.
Reporting live from downtown Cleveland Public Square…
Southern Ohio PIOs class
Lots to discuss these past few days in southern Ohio with PIOs from across the state here to learn more hands on for field PIOs.
Initial review on external affairs as well StratComms (Strategic Communications) discussion. Lots of facts as well as comparisons from past to present.

Thanks Erik! Then lots of case studies to review including reviewing video interviews with famous…
Also shared some heartwarming success stories from our area.
Hands on training in a safe classroom environment allows PIOs to explore various techniques and use equipment that usually only found with broadcast news stations.

Also gave a chance to PIOs to craft, strategize, and rollout messaging to their peeps in a simulated emergency.

Walking interviews isn’t easy to do…esp during a simulated flooding.

Solid creative messaging including a song too! (<–inspired by the Mecklenburg County TADD jingle).
Great work to all participants who attended.
Special thanks to Angela from the Washington County Health Department for hosting this collaborative workshop for everyone.

Great to have trusted fellow PIOs and friends in southern Ohio.
Game-1: #GoCavs !!!!!!!
May we head into June 2017?
May is out like trout and June has come in with a slew of activities as well as the 2017 NBA Finals!
First week I’ll be in Missouri teaching my favorite class – Social Media Tools & Techniques and a functional social media exercise in Columbus. Yes I know, that means I won’t be attending the 2017 UASI Conference in Buffalo. #Boooo. However, my free time will be spent at Game-3 and Game-4 of the 2017 NBA Championships. #GoCavs!!!!!
Second week I will be teaching the FEMA EMI Incident Management Team Plans Section Chief Course in Cincinnati. With so many members from USAR Ohio Task Force-1 (including Schulmann) attending, it’s going to be a fun class. Are you attending?
Third week I think I got blessed with the approval to take the IMT Incident Commanders course at the home EOC in Columbus. Lemme see if I can login this time (Password “JOSHUA”).
Fourth week will be doing some tactical training including quals. #pewpew
Honestly, I just hope to stay afloat this month.

Additionally, June 2017 will serve as the foundation month for the 2018 training schedule. Who’s ready for more classes?!?!?!?
Get your learn on!
Media panel for WEWS-channel 5 for PIOs & PAOs
So in a change of normal trainings, I opted to drive down a different path for our PIOs from across the state. I decided to have a media panel to talk candidly about…well PIO and media stuff! And WEWS News Channel-5 was up in the quarterly rotation!
Hiya Mike!

Note: Sarah Phinney was supposed to have joined too, but sadly, she got held over at her work for that winery explosion down south.
Me? I’ve worked with Mike for years but have never met him in-real-life. This caused much confusion/consternation from almost all the attendees as both of us are labeled as “black clouds” and magnets. So in the name of safety, I took the extra precaution in protecting myself.
Safety first right?
We chatted openly on items that news media needs and has to have to produce news at 5a and 12n and 5pm and 10p.
Here are just a few of the takeaways from this training workshop:
- “Off the record will eventually become – on the record”
- “Stop trying to avoid me onscene. Do not hide in bushes!”
- “I prefer a tweet vs an email.”
I ran some of the workshop like an Inside the Actor’s Studio Q&D. (“What makes you smile”)
As a token of my appreciation, I wanted to offer up toMike – all his tireless efforts in showcasing public safety in various communities across Ohio…
Twinkies?!? What about the Twinkies?
Yes, I figured Twinkies wouldn’t go to waste esp since Mike primarily works nights.
Thank you to Kevin Brennan, Rebecca Hysing, and everyone at the Cuyahoga County Board of Health for the hospitality and use of their large meeting room.
Thank you to all the PIOs who took the time and attended from all over the state.
Very special thanks to my crew in helping to day-of coordinate today’s events.
