Tornado siren? Today? Disaster? Emergency?!? #OHWx

Tornado siren? Today? Disaster? Emergency?!?

img_0650

On Wednesday March 23rd, 2016 at 0950 EST, communities across the state of Ohio that have tornado warning siren systems, will test them. In addition, an Emergency Alert System (EAS) warning message will be broadcast. We encourage all communities with sirens to participate in this annual event by conducting their own tornado drills and reviewing their emergency plans.

This is only a test.

Only two regions in March

February was very tough. But I believe March will be a bit more sane.

First week, I will be in Ohio doing some HAZMAT Technician stuff.

Second week, I will be headed down south to Cincinnati for a DHS Bomb course.

Third week, I will be driving to Michigan to teach social media (almost on the Canadian border).

Fourth week, I will be at our State of Ohio Emergency Operations Center teaching the brand new G-290 Basic Public Information Officers’ Course.

Fifth week, I will be teaching at the State of Colorado Emergency Operations Center.

Yep, only two regions in March – which is just fine with me.

2016 South Carolina Business Disaster Recovery Symposium – final thoughts and thanks

Last week, I had the chance to present in front of the leaders of South Carolina in Myrtle Beach at the 2016 South Carolina Business Disaster Recovery Symposium.

It was a packed house! (Photo credit: A. Hardin)

It is outstanding to see everyone, especially private industry building partnerships with governmental agencies. I talked a ton about the use of social media and communications.

Just me, standing on chairs dancing away.

Of course all the news media was there too…

And the reporter?

Trust me, the WPDE (ABC affiliate) News reporter Liz Cooper was hilarious. (Photo credit: A. Hardin)

At this Symposium, not only were they talking about preparedness…

Gahhhh, I love preparedness! My favorite month is……. (Photo credit: A. Hardin)

…we talked a ton about response and RECOVERY!

Because it isn’t as sexy, the recovery phase in Emergency Management does not have the same visibility when compared to the Preparedness phase or the Response phase. So this symposium is a perfect opportunity to showcase some messaging and how communications needs to be an integral part of any government or private business during recovery.

And when the Horry County Office of Emergency Management deems your presentation “on fleek” – *swoon*

Happy 2016 National Weather Persons Day!

This year, my favorite Meteorologist is Brooke Bingaman from the NWS-Sacramento Office in California.

NationalWeatherPersonsDay

@brookeBingaman and @rusnivek

She is an outstanding Meteorologist, rock solid social media peep, amazing presenter, and an extraordinary preparedness expert. Trust me peeps: Brooke. Is. Legit.

Diverse assignments for February 2016

January was busy and February is going to be stacked too!

In the first week, I’ll be back doing some fire-rescue work between Ohio and New Jersey.

Second week, I’ll be headed to Georgia to review a new instructor candidate (I hope he does well).

Third week, I’m back in Ohio coordinating and planning for upcoming events.

And the fourth week, I will be heading to Oklahoma for a symposium. Big bosses will be there and likely I will meet the new Director of Individual and Community Preparedness at DHS/FEMA. Suit up!

Maybe March will be more calm.

My 2 favorite quotes from last night’s #SOTU 2016

sotu_2016_when_is_it

My two favorite quotes from last night’s State of the Union:

The United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth. Period. It’s not even close. It’s not even close. It’s not even close. It’s not even close.”

and

“That’s the America I know. That’s the country we love. Clear-eyed. Big-hearted. Undaunted by challenge.”

January 2016 = Four Regions in 4 weeks

December was busier than initially planned although January 2016 is going to be rough.

In the first week, I’ll be lending my rescue expertise to New Jersey. The big city baby!

Second week, I’ll be headed to central Illinois to teach at Illinois State University. Just hoping to snag a few gondolas on my way there.

Third week, I south to teach at the Houston (Texas) Office of Emergency Management. I haven’t seen Mel since our Advanced PIO class.

Fourth week, I head to present to the big bosses at TEEX. Then a quick turnaround midweek, then off to North Carolina for preparedness and continuity keynote.

2016’s new slate is ripe – so no time to waste. Go get it!
