1730…so it’s time to talk PIO stuff
Long work day but now for some Public Information Officer (PIO) stuff.
Today’s hot topic: ongoing media relation, reporter problems, how to say no, replies that are short and blunt, and the proverbial discussion of “how can we get everyone to play nice in the sandbox!”

In the first full week, as 1Q starts to close out, I will be finishing up my yearly requirements including compliance and yearly required classes/re-certifications from the agencies I represent.
Second week, I’ll head to Boise to teach some advanced social media courses. Keep your eyes peeled for me in Idaho!
Third week, I’m headed down to Anniston for some FEMA Mission Ready Training with my favorite HQ peeps. Now you know, I wanted to attend the 2017 NEMA Mid-Year Planning Conference, but I just can’t swing it this year.
Then the fourth week, is packed with teaching some new peeps from Woodlawn, everyone’s favorite, ICS-400: Advanced Incident Command System (ICS).

Few notes for those that want to get/use one.
- We all have bigger clothes (esp in the winter time). Get the larger width and size tourniquet.
- Deploy and activate your equipment using your non dominate hand. It is likely that your primary hand maybe occupied or injured.
- Tighten ALL the way down. And then turn until the bleeding stops.
- Most importantly, train with your equipment…esp immediate critical intervention stuff.
Hope you never have to use this on anyone else or yourself.
In 2017, I’m trying something new a few times a week
In 2017, I vowed to try a few new things.
Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen – the continuous improvement of work efforts and personal efficiency, I decided that I take a few moments each week to do some meditation.
I don’t need to bang any gongs or burn any incense. (<–cause that would be a fire hazard). I just figured firming up my position might help a bit to refocus on priorities.
What brought all this? It was really my visit to the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto.
In my humble opinion (IMHO), one of the most spectacular places to visit.
Many parts make up the sum. Aside from rainfall, the sounds of calm override most.
With my meditation, these things help too.
- Sip green tea.
- Two hands.
- Centering my soul.
- Smooth thoughts. (Obv a nod to the motto “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast”)
Let’s see how this goes.
