Deep frying my turkey – I’m gonna die #DFT2018

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I’m about to die.

Glug glug glug – I measured it w/ water and turkey in the pot.

So it’s a calculated amount of peanut oil in there.

Just to be on the safe side, I’ll leave a little room for turkey expansion.

Maybe my camera puts on more pounds. HA!

OK, my propane tank is as far away as I can get it.

Don’t think I want an explosion.

Then, in case things go bad, I got some protective gear.

Awww yeah baby! Warm AND protected!

And maybe, if things go bad, I can Hong Kong Phooey kick it into the grass away from the building right?

Time to gear up!

Thinking back, this was probably a good idea to wear my turnout coat and gloves.

Yeah, I think Chicago has had a big fire before.

Yikes.

Buuuuuuuuuuut why does my turkey look like its on a cross?!?!?!??!?!?

.

But first, lemme take a selfie…

…for proof of life.

Fire is on. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay hot.

What? Did you say drop it like it’s hot?!?!

Awwwww yeah, time to get crazy-let’s drop this sucker in.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

HHOOLLEEEYYYYY MOOOOOOOLEEEYYYYY!

DDDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAYYYUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am I at the bottom yet?!?!!??! OMG! Why is this soooooo frickin hot!!!!!

Well, so far so good! I haven’t burned anything….yet.

I also took the time to clear away any brush and debris from the area. Also notice the brick non-wood sprinklered building next to me?

Additional information, I also had backup from a retired Fire Chief from the State of Ohio Fire Marshall’s Office right next to me. Despite a whole bunch of white helmets, it was definitely worth having a backup!

Did I have a backup plan? You know I did. First off, I would NOT have done this.

Second, if things got bad, I would have definitely called 9-1-1.

The last thing I need is my friends from CFD getting pissed. Tho, TBH, they would have made me fill out the NIFRS report.

And third, this was the backup plan.

Yeah, the IMT PSC and FEMA MCP comes out more often than you think.

So in the end, everything turned out great. Turkey was awesome and soooo delicious.

Few deep frying turkey tips for you:

  • Measure your peanut oil level (water + bird in pot)
  • A little less on the fill line with peanut oil is good
  • SLOWLY drop your bird in the oil
  • Use gloves and protective clothing as hot oil splashes everywhere
  • Test bird doneness via internal temperature (not time)
  • Have multiple fire extinguishers available
  • Have a rapid dump site available away from building
  • In case things go bad, have a cell phone to call 9-1-1 quickly

This year, our family invited a few new Navy family and friends over for dinner.

Glad to spend Thanksgiving with those who protect our freedoms 24-7.

We all have much to be thankful for this year.

During an emergency, stop taking pictures too close!

Probably a good time to share reminders on taking pictures DURING an emergency. Like this guy.

This was from the Crocker Park gas explosion from March 2016.

Look-just make sure you are aware of the seriousness of the incident. This one was serious.

IMHO, I think he might have been standing a bit close huh?

For the entire video, check out the WEWS news story here.

Reminds me of the 2002 Libby x Lee gas explosion I was at.

Jetzzz Jacuzzi for thawing my turkeys! #DFT2015

I’m thawing my turkey now.

DSCN4710

Wait, they don’t need the Jacuzzi bubbles?

I better take them out of the wrapper and move them inside in the tub.

turkeys in a bathtub

By removing the shrink wrap, they should thaw faster right?

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Who’s ready for Thanksgiving with @rusnivek?!?!?

Important tips:

  • If you drop a frozen solid turkey into the deep fryer, the water frozen in the turkey will react with the oil and cause a rapid reaction that will likely cause explosion.
  • The overflow and reaction will likely cause peanut oil overflow which can lead to a gigantic fireball when ignited by the open flame.
  • Peanut oil on your concrete is hard to clean. It will leave a massive smelly stain on your driveway.
  • Even a partially frozen turkey will retain the water/moisture and initiate the oil + water reaction with possible explosion and fire.

And here I am just thawing my turkey. Maybe I should call my insurance agent.

Gigantic fireball likely #DFT2015

How big of a fire could it be?

123

Well, that escalated quickly.

Maybe I should wear all of my protective gear. Check out this professional. Shorts? No gloves? No problem!

Winner winner 3rd degree burns!!!!

What do the pros have to say? Here’s the NFPA’s fact sheet that says don’t do it.

Grrrrrrrrrreat – I’m gonna die.

Soooooooooo, here’s tonight’s prevention steps:

  1. Thawing my frozen turkey tonight in my fridge.
  2. Checking my fire extinguishers (yes, that’s plural)
  3. Debate on using my talon hook or my halligan for rapid turkey extraction (I think I’m favoring the Talon hook bec it’s longer).

What’s the number for 9-1-1?

Explosive demolition of 9 steel spans of the old bridge #CLE #Cleveland #kaboom

Controlled Demolition of Old Innerbelt Bridge to Take Place July 12
Watch LIVE at Cleveland.com or wkyc.com

Hold on to your hats! The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Trumbull-Great Lakes-Ruhlin (TGR) are pleased to announce that controlled explosive demolition of the steel skeleton of the 1959 Innerbelt Bridge will take place at first light on Saturday morning July 12.

Controlled demolition will drop five (5) of the nine (9) steel spans of the old bridge. The team which includes Joseph B. Fay Company and Controlled Demolition, Inc. has used a mixture of both traditional demolition along with the “controlled” – or explosive – demolition method.  The bridge railings, lights, barriers and concrete driving surface were all removed using traditional methods.  Specific spans over the river and railroads were also disassembled in a traditional manner. Concrete piers will be demolished this summer using traditional methods.

The plan protects the businesses that operate from the Flats as well as people living and working in the Tremont neighborhood.

Members of the public are invited to watch the event live at www.Cleveland.com or www.wkyc.com. Due to limited view-sheds, only a small public viewing area near the corner of East 14th Street and Broadway Avenue is available.  The area will be accessible beginning at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12. Paid, public parking is available in downtown lots – a short walk from the viewing area. Even better, ride with our friends at RTA!  The #19 bus provides direct access to the site. Visit www.rideRTA.com for more!

A 1,000 foot perimeter will be set around the blast zone and many local roadways including I-90, the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, Abbey Avenue and others will be closed during the event.  For a map of anticipated closures and closures times, please log-on to www.Innerbelt.org.

ODOT is in the midst of replacing the 1959 bridge with two new structures – one to carry traffic in each direction.  The pair have been named in honor of statesman George V. Voinovich. Replacement of the 1959 bridge is vital to the success of moving people in and out of downtown Cleveland now and in the future.  It will enhance capacity, bolster our economy and ensure the safety of motorists.  The first of the pair is now open and temporarily carrying traffic in both directions until completion of the second new bridge in late 2016.

Members of the public with questions or concerns are encouraged to call the Innerbelt hotline at 216.344.0069 or email info@Innerbelt.org

In this view, Tremont is to the left and downtown is to the right. The spans marked in yellow will be demolished using the “controlled” demolition method on July 12.

Thank goodness, I did NOT burn my house down… #DFT2013

Say hello to my little friend…

IMG_0357 - Copy

…his name is Deep Fried Turkey #DFT2013

Boom – SUCCESS!

Much to the dismay of my fellow Firefighters, Emergency Management Professionals, Paramedics, EMTs, and Police Officers – I didn’t burn my house down.

But it IS time to chow down with the family.

Hope these tweets and posts have helped you out in your turkey adventures today.

Remember:

  • Be safe and do NOT compromise for your safety.
  • Deep frying turkey is NO joke. This is serious business.
  • Make sure your fryer is at least 30 ft away from any house or structure.
  • Do NOT deep fry your turkey on your deck.
  • No kids outside.
  • Stay with your turkey fryer all the time. Do NOT go inside to warm up.
  • Have your cell phone ready and know how to call 9-1-1.
  • Have a fire extinguisher ready to go close by.
  • And of course, no adult beverages while cooking.

Note: For cleanup? I’m going to let the oil cool down for about 6 hours. And regardless if there is no fire, I’m still keeping my extinguisher on the ready.

Keep all of these safety tips handy as you finish your bird this joyous holiday season.

I have much to be thankful for…like you folks as well as my solid family and friends.

Enjoy your evening everyone!
