Brock Long nominated to FEMA Administrator position

Brock Long of North Carolina to be Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Homeland Security. Mr. Long has more than 16 years of experience assisting and supporting local, state, and federal governments with building robust emergency management and public health preparedness programs. Since 2011, he has worked as Executive Vice President at Hagerty Consulting, where he provides strategic direction and leadership to the firm’s full complement of emergency management programs and professionals. Mr. Long has served as Project Executive for more than 50 projects in all parts of the United States, ranging from complex attack scenario exercises to designing multi-jurisdictional, all-hazard evacuation plans for major Urban Area Security Initiative designated jurisdictions. From 2008-2011, Mr. Long served as Director of Alabama’s Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) under Governor Bob Riley. As Director, he served as the State Coordinating Officer for 14 disasters, including eight presidentially-declared events. Mr. Long also served as an on-scene State Incident Commander for the Alabama Unified Command during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Prior to his position as Director at AEMA, Mr. Long was a FEMA Regional Hurricane Program Manager, FEMA Hurricane and Evacuation Liaison Team Leader, and statewide school safety coordinator for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. His areas of expertise include strategic emergency operations planning, exercise, evacuation, school safety, recovery management, and response logistics.

Great to chat and discuss partnerships in disasters today with all the American Red Cross pros today.

Special thanks to ARC Regional Communications Officer Mary Williams and her team @NEORedCross for the hospitality.


Glad to share info and better prepare our Emergency Support Function peeps for activation into the EOC / JIC / ICP.

Building partnerships before a disaster will only strengthen our response agencies and allow us as PIOs to better meet the needs of the community – definitely a best practice for success.

Last day of #preparedness talks in Georgia in Glynn County

Another great day in Georgia talking about preparedness to various pros.

Special thanks to Glynn County (GA) EMA Director Jay Wiggins for hosting the class…

…and special thanks to Laura Ginn who coordinated efforts on behalf of everyone in City, County, and State of Georgia.

Glad to see so many participants here to learn but more importantly, share information and challenges and success stories they found within their community. Espically when it comes to senior care and supportive care – these issues need to be talked about openly and various members of family and staff need to be aware of challenges they may face when disaster strikes.

Aside from www.ready.gov program – there are a ton of other agencies to follow to ascertain great and trusted information.

Remember, a short time ago, this entire area was hit by Hurricane Matthew with MANDATORY evacuations.

Building these kinds of relationships before a disaster can only strengthen our efforts in response and recovery.

Plus, it’s super awesome to hang with like-minded individuals who are so dedicated to preparedness.

Discussing preparedness and evacuation needs for seniors

This morning was all about preparedness and drilling down disaster readiness focusing on senior citizens. Lots of discussion on evacuation triage/transport and accountability as well as shelter operations. 


Glad to see so many partners in public safety contributing to creative solutions for disaster preparedness. 


Additionally, so proud to see so many agencies building networks in class with each other.


Although we are often siloed in daily operations, we must collaborate and respond wth each other. This all-hazards approach is the cornerstone of emergency management. Whether local/state/Federal, it showcases Emergency Management’s ability to coordinate before, during, and after any disaster/emergency.

Brand new Social Media Engagement Strategies course debut at SAC EOC #NDPTC

Solid start to the week being able to deliver the brand new FEMA NDPTC Social Media Engagement Strategies course.


Numerous pros from across the state of California attending today.

Special thanks to the Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services in hosting this fun class in their Emergency Operations Center.

Super special shoutout goes to MayJo!


Talked specifically about addressing audiences and their appropriate platforms. Mediums like static posts are great however we need to explore outside of your comfort zone and try new avenues to communicate. FacebookLive, Periscope, InstagramLive, YouTubeLive, etc…..these new emerging live broadcast tools can allow agencies to be creative in their broadcast of messages.


Solid afternoon facilitation on the formulation of a strategic communications specifically focusing in on social media and audience engagement.


And of course the standard shout out to our friend Cheryl.


Overall, the intent of this class is really to be a catalyst to start a meaningful conversation about engaging your constituents on various social media platforms.


Obviously, you would be taking FEMA NDPTC PER-344 Social Media Tools & Techniques first – which gives you a heavy dose of the currrent tools/platforms that are out there as well as a bunch of tactics and techniques that you could use in your EOC or JIC.


Both courses provide a different take on social media actions esp during disasters / crisis.


Keep on learning peeps. Much more to digest and figure out.


We all must do better to support our local communities, county coordinators, and state officials to work and communicate together before, during, and after the disaster.
