“All I’m saying is that starting in Ohio and to the rest of the country, we have the ability to better prepare our peeps for disasters or emergencies.” – K. Sur

We all have outstanding communities in each of our 88 counties in Ohio. When they engage with numerous all-hazards public safety professionals, it becomes a whole community effort in preparedness. In essence, these are core programs that everyone can participate.

When the community gets involved, everyone wins.

Enhance your preparedness efforts by attending free local classes #NatlPrep #PrepareAthon

It’s still the third week of 2016 National Preparedness Month!

Trust me, you don’t need to wait for the earthquakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven (to) shake – just attend a few classes with local emergency management.

angry

Don’t get frustrated…Preparedness is easy!

But seriously.

These classes can help better prepare you for many natural disasters, hazards, and/or common emergencies.

At the very least, they can detail what kind of actions will be taken by first responders in the response phase of the disaster.

In today’s class, we had a spirited discussion about MREs and preparedness kits. Even first responders and their respective families need emergency preparedness kits too.

Most of these short classes or day-long trainings are often free and scheduled well in advance. And if you can’t attend in-person trainings, there are many online classes available for no-cost on preparedness.

Yep, you guessed it, straight up good old networking with so many public safety pros.

Hamilton County All-Hazards NIMS ICS-300 class during #NatlPrep Month!

Part of being prepared is taking classes with your local public safety professionals.

Hamilton County EMA Emily Lakamp welcoming class

Today, Hamilton County EMA partnered with Ohio Emergency Management Agency to bring ICS-300: Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents. 3-day intensive course to talk about the basics of ICS and NIMS and how it applies to all public safety and everyone during an incident/event.

OEMA Instructor Kevin Sur breaking down PPD-5 and PPD-8 for the ICS-300 class

If I counted correctly, we have almost all ESFs represented today! #awesome

Training is key as we continue to push preparedness efforts throughout the county and state. Learning about capabilities is key in any disaster response.

Ohio EMA Southwest Regional Supervisor Phil Clayton addressing participants today

Glad to see everyone engaged today…esp on disaster response.

This afternoon, in the world of tabletop exercise disaster training, we will likely ruin Central City, decimate Columbiana County, and then trash the State of Columbia. Oh yeah, and of course flood Emerald City too.

Support your local first responders #NatlPrep #PrepareAthon

Third solid week of 2016 National Preparedness Month! This week, we honor and celebrate all of our all-hazards first responder who serve tirelessly throughout the country.

Every day, thousands of first responders (paid and volunteer) put it all on the line for the general public we know and people we don’t know. Day or night, countless individuals respond to the call and make a difference in each community.

15 years later and we never forget. Never. #NatlPrep #PrepareAthon

2016 National Preparedness Month – but on this September 11th, 2016 we should all pause and remember those who have fallen for this great country.

Like many other Firefighters, I did my share at FDNY with the lads at 44 Engine.

Outstanding memories.

15 years later, I hope the memory does not fade from anyone’s mind.

Never forget.

@rusnivek

How did I find out about the September 11th, 2001 attack?

Where was I when I heard of the events unfolding on September 11th, 2001?

I received a phone call on my Motorola StarTAC cell phone from Cleveland Airport Crash Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Joe Zemek. Excerpt from phone conversation below.

Sur: “Fluff, that’s in New York City….”

Zemek: “No, ATC picked up the plane making the turn over Cleveland right now.”

Sur: “Are you serious?”

Zemek: “It doesn’t sound good. This isn’t a drill Kev. It’s the real thing man.”

Save your #Family #Emergency #Communications #Plan on multiple devices #NatlPrep #PrepareAthon

Here’s an easy Saturday plan – take a few moments to have your Family Emergency Communications Plan in hard copy, saved on laptop/tablet, and of course on your smart phone enabled device.

By having multiple backup copies of your Family Emergency Communications Plan, you can be assured that during an evacuation, you’ll have instant access to it for use by any member of your family.

Nice work! Now, it’s Saturday! Get out there and have some fun!

But do it safely and responsibly.
