Run? Hide? Fight? Here’s a few better ones

Tuesday morning hit hard after a long holiday weekend. On the ride in, I was thinking more about the new terminology that will be rolled out shortly to replace the “Run! Hide! Fight!” – for active shooter situations.

At last week’s National Preparedness Symposium, one of the FEMA Consortium partners brought up the newly revamped procedures.

1. Lock or block it.

2. Become invisible.

3. Silence your phone.

4. Silence yourself.

5. When you come out, ask “Is it OK?”

Lots of discussion on review of actions too. While heroic in practice/training, we are seeing that people are more reserve when it comes to actual emergencies.

Same as before, contemplate a counter-attack strategy with others who are stuck with you. “I go high and you go low” type conversations will help coordinate your immediate response if a threat presents itself.

Having good communications skills as well as non-verbal communications skills are critical esp in a dangerous situation.

Get to know your co-workers and your neighbors.

Building relationships now will only increase successes

We must continue to work closely with our partners in all emergency services because the safety of the public is of the utmost concern.


I am proud of the work I am asked to do because it brings agencies closer together and ultimately in times of crisis, agencies will seamlessly showcase their skills together and find success together.

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Because 6/6 is good numbers.


I hope your agency is building stronger relationships BEFORE any major emergency or disaster. By strengthening partnerships with a wide swath professionals, we can only become smarter and more successful.

 Call it “Increasing Situational Awareness/Common Operating Picture” or “All-hazards planning” – IDGAF.

Make it your prerogative to build relationships now. Right now.

Don’t make me step on your face. Do it!

Boss went nuts on a flight – now daughter’s foolish conduct

It’s interesting on how various cultures around the world approach the delivered message.

As an example, this type of delivery would never work in the US.

Public Information Officers (PIOs) and Public Affairs Officers (PAOS) must understand significant differences when delivering messages to areas who are culturally diverse.

Your thoughts on the Korean Air President’s comment? “Daughter’s foolish conduct”

(In a few other reports, his message was translated as “Please scold me. It is my fault”)

Again, I need to provide you more public safety social media tips. And since you have very little time in the day to spare, maybe you can read this while going down the elevator. Again, I’ll keep it short.

Here’s part-2 of my top 6 SM tips for public safety professionals / Public Information Officers (PIOs). And yes, it’s still free for you.

@rusnivek Social Media Tip-2: Every post, every avenue, every audience…anytime.

With so many different avenues of social media, one person cannot conceivably keep up with every emerging new program.

Pick a few platforms that work for you and that your audience mainly uses and post. Make it pertinent to your mission, make those posts reflect your organization’s objectives and goals, but most importantly, feed it.

Don’t be such a stickler about posting every day at the same bat time, at same bat place, on the same bat things. Change it up make your audience crave your info and make them check your feed incessantly for information they need.

During an emergency, don’t just decide “Oh now is the time we should start to…”

STOP <SMH>  cause you are already dead in the water. #FAIL

So feed it anytime. It only takes a few minutes to feed it. Do it now.
