Bioterrorism discussion at IIT in Chicago
This past weekend, I was invited to swing by the Illinois Institute of Technology Graduate School in downtown Chicago.
Spirited discussion included bioterrorism, social media data/intelligence, explosives, nuc/rad release, mass panic/evacuation, and of course drone operations for large events.
Participants included many members of Chicago Police’s upper administration and leadership from Chicago Police specialty teams.
They asked Dr. Fagel if I was a Special Agent kinda guy. Clearly, my Aloha shirt on a Saturday really messed things up.
Overall, it was a great day to be in downtown Chicago.
Looking forward to sharing some SME knowledge with the graduate students this fall.
YikYak now allows pictures! VoteUp right?
Breaking news: YikYak now allows pictures!
For those that have not used it, YikYak is a social media mobile app on iOS and Android that allows people to anonymously create and view posts (aka Yaks) within a close proximity of the user. The Yaks that are posted can be voted up or down by other users which will propel them higher on the list of conversational threads. Many college and local high school kids are using this app as a virtual/digital message/corkboard.
Soooooo, is that a good thing or bad thing?
- Good because pictures always help enhance information gathering.
- Bad because…well…it’s anonymous pictures.
- Bad because it’s anonymous.
- Bad because it’s proximity…which means in order to use YikYak, you have to be close.
I bet you are thinking YikYak is all just fun petty stuff. But before you think it’s all just a playful game, think about the potential of menacing/bullying. Now think about it from the law enforcement side where we need to track anonymously posted information for evidence.
Ride the Yak.

In the coming months, I’ll be working closely with Cleveland Police on a special project.
Which divisions? I’ll be working closely with their Mounted Unit, K9 Teams, Airport Detail, Bomb Team, SWAT Team, and of course their Air unit (helo).

July 2015 has crazy-town written all over it
June 2015 turned out to be pretty crazy…and July 2015 has crazy-town written all over it.
First week: I’ll be working on a few things for NW Ohio and their recent flooding. Most likely Public Information Officer response stuff. At the end of the week/weekend, I got a special project with Cleveland Police K-9 Teams, SWAT, Bomb Team, Air Unit, and Mounted Units. Finally back in Region-5!
Second week: I’ll be teaching the Ohio Emergency Management Agency’s Basic Public Information Officer’s Course and Joint Information Center/System in Medina County. Working the PIO magic for the state!
Third week: I’ll be teaching a weekend ICS-300 and a weekend ICS-400 in Ohio. If possible, I might sneak away during the week to Frankfort, Kentucky to pilot a new FEMA PIO Course in Region-4.
Fourth week: I’ll be finishing up the ICS-400 course and then coordinating a site visit and functional exercise for our NE Ohio PIO Task Force (NEO-PIO-TF) to one of the local news stations in the Cleveland area.
It’s still a bit hectic, but I am hoping to see some peace to my schedules soon.
Definitely an all-hazards approach to events in NOLA
Good to see so much emphasis put on event planning and pre-staged apparatus for events ongoing in NOLA.
Just the sheer number of agencies involved is a clear sign that emergency agencies here truly believe in the all-hazards mantra.
Well done to all visible and unmarked agencies involved in providing public safety.

Just like any other service, social media platforms are bound to go down. And when that happens, a small amount of the population does NOT know how to react appropriately. Some residents of California decided that calling 9-1-1 was their only resort to getting logged back into Facebook.
Ahem. Clearly, this is NOT an emergency. Sgt Brink is right in making it very clear to his audience (on Twitter) that Facebook’s non-service is not a Law Enforcement issue. Common sense right?
Most agencies should have an easy contingency plan when this type of situation happens. Social Media postings and engagement will help decrease calls to various public safety agencies…including during non-emergency times. So having this type of canned responses ready to push out when a major social media platform has the hiccups, might help your constituents navigate their (loss of) digital life. Additional use of a trending hashtag will bring more visibility to your post by informing others of actions, or in this case, non-actions.
A more effective tweet could have read:
| #Facebook is NOT a law enforcement issue. Pls don’t call us about it being down, we don’t know when FB will be back up #facebookdown |
By phrasing it this way:
- You sternly address that this social media platform is NOT a law enforcement matter (duh).
- You use a hashtags that is trending (#Facebookdown) that will help increase visibility in your tweets.
- You highlight the importance of being current and active on recent news/events.
- You stress the importance of engaging with your social media users on various social media platforms.
Time is valuable, so tweet good stuff.

Do it….Get to know your local emergency services.
For those of you who have written plans, please share them with your local emergency services. Take your kids to the Fire Stations, Police Stations, and EMS Stations…teach them the importance of these essential services who will be first on the scene during an emergency.
Teach your kids how to call 9-1-1. Teach them that help will always be there.
And yes, it is your steadfast preparedness efforts that greatly contribute to the readiness of the US.
So take a moment today to reflect on one of the worst terrorist attacks in the history of the US. As a country, we will never stray from the freedoms that allow us to be the home of the brave.
I have sad, but great memories of my time at Ground Zero.
I’m honored to have been a part of this effort at the WTC.
I witnessed the resolve and resilience of everyone in New York City and across this great nation. This fierce American spirit should remind each of us of the importance of our disaster work we do every day.
I believe everyone in the world can remember what they were doing when they heard the news of the attacks in 2001. And now more than ever, we must take the steps to ensure our freedoms continue to ring for every single American.
Please honor those Firefighters and countless other heroes who have given their lives for our great nation.
Never give up. Never forget.
