Emergency Services

Twinsburg Fire for a bit today

Spent part of my day at Twinsburg Fire (Summit County, OH).

Great to see Fire Chief Tim Morgan. Fun fact, I first met him when he was a new red helmet. We talked a bit about regionalization as well as building partnerships through our IMTs (Incident Management Teams).

But the fun began when I got a chance to chat with Assistant Fire Chief Steve Bosso about PIO stuff.

And of course other stuff too.

Say it with me: “partnerships”

Trust me, its great to have such an outspoken advocate for safety at Twinsburg and Summit County.

Be safe peeps – always lean on your trusted fellow peeps before the big one hits.

Quick presentation on Tools and Social Media Platforms specifically addressing live broadcast technologies and lessons learned.

Yes, I’ll promise to show them my PIO stick (aka my GOT rod)

Great to see so many familiar faces in the crowd today.

22 years ago, OKC bombing

We remember the victims/survivors of the Oklahoma City Bombing. We must continue to be vigilant in protecting our great nation.

I like many of you, images from that day are seared into my mind. While many published images depict the building, death, and destruction, we must move forward and remember all those lives changed in Oklahoma City that day in 1995.

If you ever get a chance to visit Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – I recommend you spend some time at the national memorial. It is well worth your time.

We must dedicate more resources to Homeland Security and all local, state, and Federal partners who are integral in everyday safety.

Teaching my favorite social media class at the Volusia County EOC today #NDPTC

Great start this morning at the Volusia County Emergency Operations Center to teach my favorite class – Social Media Tools & Techniques!

Great EOC location and outstanding learning environment to host this FEMA NDPTC course!

Today, we have all-hazards participants from across the state of Florida. #awesome

Including the entire contingent from Jacksonville Fire/Rescue! #JAX

We talked a TON about new platforms and techniques that agencies can put into place to increase their community engagement.

Engaging in-class table top social media activity (simulation) showcases the need to address consistent messaging with various government entities.

While typical emergency services (like Fire, EMS, Police) are still the cornerstone of immediate responses, we need to branch out and consider other government services that can easily amplify critical messaging during an emergency.

Additionally, we as professional communicators must branch out and think outside the communications box. Old school thinking like: “You don’t use AP style while tweeting?” – showcases the need to think about the target audience who will receive/digest our message. #amiright

We must encourage more partnerships between public safety agencies, which, in the end, will showcase the collaborative approach that defines Emergency Management.

“We must work closely with our partners in public safety to ensure a coordinated response and completion of our mission objectives.” – @rusnivek

Special thanks to Tom and all the PIO Pros who attend our training at the Volusia County Emergency Operations Center.

Returning from #GSMCon2017

Well, I guess it’s time to “head back from Dallas”

Let me get comfortable in my exit row seat

Special thanks to Sarah Gamblin-Luig (@SirenLadySTL) for chaperoning my quick 2-day trip for the 2017 Government Social Media Conference (#GSMCon2017) in Texas.

“Attending” the #GSMCon2017 in Dallas #coasttocoastkevin

Today, I am “attending” the Government Social Media Conference (#GSMCon2017) in Dallas.

Thanks to a few late night ideas spurred by Maryland Emergency Management’s Emily Allen (@allen_emilym) and Garden Grove Fire California Capt Nguyen (@PIOthanhn).

Bahhahahaahaha.

Sounds like an interesting talk from Mary Jo Flynn and Sarah Miller now on Social Media and UAS use by government officials.

Ahem. Well, what can I say?

Maybe a few safety messages on keeping your mobile devices charged…..Wait, Lazo can you help?

I tried to win a few raffle prizes, but sadly that didn’t happen.

While on the step and repeat, Conference host Kristy Dalton is giving me the look…the look to attend #GSMCon2018 too.

I spy, with my right eye…Bronlea too!

Reporting live from…..well Dallas!
