Multiple picture post and Instagram video views do not make more Insta likes #SMEM

For those in the social media realm of Public Information Officers (PIOs) – I want to address a common question I get all the time:

How do I get more likes on Instagram?

My response: It’s not how much likes per Insta post, it’s really about how much engagement or interaction you have with your identified audience.

That’s right – while likes are one form of measurement of your post, it is not the only form of engagement that you can have on Instagram.

For those that post videos, you can likely include the number of views as a point of engagement.

For those that count the amount of click-throughs out of your main page (listed in your link on your Instagram profile) – yes, that too is a form of engagement.

And for those that post multiple pictures on one post, IMHO, it will likely get you more swipes! But think for a moment, that is a deterrent to more likes?

While I think posting multiple pictures are cool, I would lightly discourage it as it takes away from the viewer’s attention span – and likely causing them NOT to like as they have already committed a swipe or click to your post by reviewing other images. They are not likely to re-engage and double tap your already multiple pictures they spent time on swiping left or right on. Consider multiple pictures in one picture (Layout or PicStitch).

Yep, videos and multiple pictures will likely get you less likes because of the inherent human action replacing the actual double-tap (like) by actually viewing your posted video or viewing your multiple picture post.

So to recap:

  • A video will likely cause you to decrease your likes.
  • A multiple picture post will cause you to decrease your likes.
  • Just some food for thought this Tuesday.

Prediction: I believe Instagram will add more emotions to their posts to increase engagement (similar to Facebook’s multiple emotional reactions).

Don’t forget to Instagram that.

A few hours ago, Facebook just rolled out a few new features you should be aware of.

First, right below your personal profile picture, you can see they have added an additional sentence so you can add a description about you.

For this specific feature, Facebook has limited you to 101 characters, attempted imbedded emojis or other linking directives (like Twitter handles outside of Facebook world) do not work.

Why is this important? Three things:

  1. It allows Facebook to gather more information about you by allowing you to place topics that best reflect you (aka self-identified targeted words).
  2. They can use these descriptors to serve you more ads and/or grow your networks to those with similar word associations.
  3. Hyperlinks do not work in this descriptor box.

And if you think this is familiar, this description feature box parallels Twitter’s description box which is also located below your twitter name and Twitter handle.

Facebook has also added a new feature where you can add 5 additional pictures about yourself. Think of this as an enhanced profile picture. This allows you to showcase 5 different profiled images of yourself on your personal Facebook page.

This feature obviously makes it look more Tinderish. Gawd – *swipe left* please!

Why more pictures? Better facial recognition. User contributed best profile pictures of themselves for identification.

A few days ago, Facebook crashed as they were pushing for the launch of their 360-video, but if you thought this feature could lead to a few seconds of video profile picture of yourself, you would be SnapChat correct.

Two new features on Twitter….I mean SnapChat….I mean Tinder….I mean Facebook.

You get the idea…Zuck’s blurring the lines again.

140 SWATTING is the new thing

On Saturday, a user on Twitter posted threats about specific flights.

These terroristic tweets were taunting and often vulgar with careless disregard for the safety of numerous people. Authorities were contacted and an immediate investigation was started. Multiple flights were halted, Flights from Portland Portland and Milwaukee were identified and Atlanta Airport was checked for bombs.

Targeting various airlines, the threats moved on from Delta Airlines to Southwest Airlines.

Good practice – the verbiage used by Southwest is good communications/social media verbiage to use on Twitter when responding to immediate threats.

User cited supposedly specific information on how the plot was carried out.

Taunting the safety of passengers on a public forum is bad.

In the end, the person making the threats identified a specific address of location. Again, taunting law enforcement.

Easily found on Google Maps, Chicago Police was dispatched to this address to verify information.

As I predicted, the address did not yield the subject.

In my opinion (and how you should interpret this story is simple): It takes is 140-characters to send you to jail.

From the intel POV: Lots to glean from the info/data posted in these tweets.

From the safety POV: Lots of operational assets to mobilze.

From the Emergency Management POV: Lots to coordinate with various all-hazards public safety agencies in multiple places.

This would be a good time to remind you of DHS’ phrase – “If you see something, say something”.
