FEMA OEMA G0291: Joint Information Center/System class at the Cleveland EOC! #PIO

Happy AlohaFriday and a great start to the FEMA OEMA G0291: Joint Information Center / Joint Information System course here at the Cleveland EOC!

So naturally, we talked a bunch of JIC stuff including our third guest VIP – day shift Cleveland JIC Manager of the 2016 RNC and the led JIC Manager of the Christmas plane crash in 2016, Beth Zietlow DeJesus!!!

Not only sharing stories about coordination amongst local, county, and Federal agencies on the recovery process, Beth was able to share a few stories about the media on controlling the message and handling mis-information.

Great experiences to share with out new PIOs!

Outstanding class this week. Proud of the work and collaboration in class shared by everyone. Great to see these new PIOs as they increase their organization’s visibility.

Now go forth, and use your new PIO skillz for good!

Also, yeah.

Facebook looking more Twitterish or Tinderish or SnapChatish Safety-PIO-SM-15-005

15-005: Facebook looking more Twitterish or Tinderish or SnapChatish
Agency: Facebook platform Topic(s):         Facebook (personal)
Date: 10-02-15 Platform:        Facebook

A few hours ago, Facebook just rolled out a few new features you should be aware of.

First, right below your personal profile picture, you can see they have added an additional sentence so you can add a description about you.

image1

For this specific feature, Facebook has limited you to 101 characters, attempted imbedded emojis or other linking directives (like Twitter handles outside of Facebook world) do not work.

Why is this important? Three things:

  1. It allows Facebook to gather more information about you by allowing you to place topics that best reflect you (aka self-identified targeted words).
  2. They can use these descriptors to serve you more ads and/or grow your networks to those with similar word associations.
  3. Hyperlinks do not work in this descriptor box.

And if you think this is familiar, this description feature box parallels Twitter’s description box which is also located below your twitter name and Twitter handle.

Facebook has also added a new feature where you can add 5 additional pictures about yourself. Think of this as an enhanced profile picture. This allows you to showcase 5 different profiled images of yourself on your personal Facebook page.

image2

This feature obviously makes it look more Tinderish. Gawd – *swipe left* please!

Why more pictures? Better facial recognition. User contributed best profile pictures of themselves for identification.

A few days ago, Facebook crashed as they were pushing for the launch of their 360-video, but if you thought this feature could lead to a few seconds of video profile picture of yourself, you would be SnapChat correct.

Two new features on Twitter….I mean SnapChat….I mean Tinder….I mean Facebook.

You get the idea…Zuck’s blurring the lines again.

Keep your social media tools game sharp peeps!

Statement on Hospital Wing / Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital (TN) crash #LODD

I extend my sympathies for the loss of life in Tennessee following this morning’s Hospital Wing crash in Somerville (Fayette County) Tennessee.

Initial reports show that no patients were onboard the Eurocopter AS350 during flight. Emergency crews on scene have reported 3 deaths including Hospital Wing Pilot Charles Smith, Pedi-Flite Nurse Carrie Barlow and Pedi-Flite Respiratory Therapist Denise Adams.

Local and regional authorities are leading the investigation and recovery as well as providing assistance as needed.

Numerous agencies have been in close contact with the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and Hospital Wing flight program and all stand ready to provide assistance as requested.

I encourage everyone to support the fallen flight crew’s families and those who work with them in their time of need.

Your crisis response plan should not include spray paint #PIO

Thai Airways had a front landing gear failure upon landing at Bangkok.

As part of their crisis plan, they spray painted/blacked out their company logo from the aircraft.

Ahem…despite your vehicles, apparatus, aircraft, etc….getting into an accident, do not try to spray paint your logo off the rigs.

Here to help illustrate the point, check this short video out.

Kudos to those crazy Taiwanese animation folks.
