Busy Monday morning instructing at the District of Columbia Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
I’m just glad to see so many partners in public safety participating.
Trust me, I’m glad to be instructing in the Emergency Operations Center too.
So many resources here like a busy 9-1-1 call center, Watch Desk, 3-1-1 call center, and Fusion Center.
Training and education will help everyone work cohesively together in an emarrrrrrrrrrrrrgency.

August was solid, but September is going to be huge because it’s NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH!!!!!
First and second week, it’ll all be planning for a gigantic upcoming all-hazards PIO/PAO Conference.
Third week will be spent teaching ICS-300 for Ohio EMA to my friends in the SW part of Ohio. And then on Friday, attending the Ohio PIO Symposium.
Fourth week, I’ll be teaching at Washington DC’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management EOC. Upon return, then presenting at the Wayne County (Ohio) Fire Chief’s Conference on PIO/Social Media.
Fifth week, I’ll be presenting on PIO and cyber at the infrastructure at the statewide infrastructure protection conference in Region-7. Who knows, if I can do it, maybe some tactical training in Alliance too. #pewpew
And ALL month long, I’ll be participating in National Preparedness month activities that you can share with your constituents. If we can better prepare our peeps, we can increase our national level of community resilience.
Thanks to the www.ready.gov program, it is easier than ever to get involved and prepared.

An important part of any Joint Information Center (JIC): Now discussing the best non-verbal urgent alert hand signals for all staff deployed to the JIC.
Clearly, Mama PIO wins this round.

Lots of new social media friends in Michigan.
Many mahalos to the outstanding hosts from the Michigan State University Police Department and the use of their Emergency Operations Center for our #NDPTC class.
Our class included a social media inject from FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate.
Lots of discussion on data mining, geolocation, and information gathering including a little real-time people uses and their platforms. How was your coffee Valerie?

Sister Michael showcased the importance of all-hazard PIO involvement in emergency response to a natural hazard.
Everyone was able to share experiences and help each other improve – esp thinking outside the box on various scenarios.
By the end of this in-class activity, our participants realized that there are so many parts to a “simple disaster” that it pays to build partnerships early.
It’s all hands working in an emergency – so build your relationships early before a disaster.
Remember: At 0300, you ugly, you smell, you stink – and clearly that’s not the best time to meet new people and to function in an emergency at 110%.
