Some transitional or bridging phrases because you know… #PIO #PAO #ESF15

Just watched a ton of interviews on TV. So, is “You know…” the new “Um….”

uh-microphone

C’mon peeps. We are all capable of doing better.

ron-burgundy-2

For those that need a little help, reference your cue/quiet cards with transitional/bridging phrases.

  • “We need to focus in on…”
  • “Let me reiterate the main problem here is…”
  • “Another factor to consider is…”
  • “Oh, that reminds me…”

Remember, your audience doesn’t know…so help them, well, you know…

Day-3 Ohio EMA ICS 300 course with 911 PSAP & Belmont County EMA EOC

Third and final day of the Ohio EMA ICS-300 course at Belmont College.

Mid morning, we had lots of great discussion for formal demobilization plans as well priority release procedures.

img_9858

Our class had some serious discussion on cost vs expectations on resources. If you’ve ever been deployed to a disaster, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Rounding out to the last module, almost test time!

img_9861

After the class was over, I was able to score a visit to Belmont County 911 dispatch center for our class. So I invited the whole class to attend too!

cugrv2qxyaa_fai

Special thanks to Mr. Hudak for the tour and detailed explanation on normal operations in their Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) / 911 call center.

img_9862

Our class then moved over to the Belmont County Emergency Management Agency where our class was given a formal tour of their Emergency Operation Center (EOC).

cugbqf7ueaalpmd

They just happen to be monitoring Hurricane Matthew – so that made it even better for all participants to see how this EOC can monitor any situation in real time. Thank you Belmont County EMA!

cugbqf6viaaulhc

Positions ready…Executive Policy Room ready…ARES Comms center ready…fully operational…who could ask for anything more?!!?!? Even the bonus resources they have were great to see how they could support operations and paint a better picture to increase situational awareness / common operating picture (SA/COP).

cugbqf8uaaafy3z

Gah, I see this EOC being a great resource for many all hazards partners in public safety.

Great to showcase the efforts of local emergency management professionals and how they pair with Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA).

Special thanks to Glenn Trudo and Belmont College for being such gracious hosts for the OEMA ICS-300 class.

Final day of training at DCHSEMA #NatlPrep

Also excited to finally make it to NOAA/NWS Headquarters! Special thanks to my old friend and PIO extraordinaire Cindy.

Every single Emergency Management class is all about building relationships. No matter NIMS/ICS, EOC, Hazardous Weather, Intelligence, or Social Media – build your network of trusted partners in public safety.

Super glad to see so much participation during September: National Preparedness Month aka my favorite month! #NatlPrep

Busy September 2016 = National Preparedness Month #NatlPrep #PrepareAthon

August was solid, but September is going to be huge because it’s NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH!!!!!

First and second week, it’ll all be planning for a gigantic upcoming all-hazards PIO/PAO Conference.

Third week will be spent teaching ICS-300 for Ohio EMA to my friends in the SW part of Ohio. And then on Friday, attending the Ohio PIO Symposium.

Fourth week, I’ll be teaching at Washington DC’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management EOC. Upon return, then presenting at the Wayne County (Ohio) Fire Chief’s Conference on PIO/Social Media.

Fifth week, I’ll be presenting on PIO and cyber at the infrastructure at the statewide infrastructure protection conference in Region-7. Who knows, if I can do it, maybe some tactical training in Alliance too. #pewpew

And ALL month long, I’ll be participating in National Preparedness month activities that you can share with your constituents. If we can better prepare our peeps, we can increase our national level of community resilience.

fema_regional_map

Thanks to the www.ready.gov program, it is easier than ever to get involved and prepared.

Hope to see you engaging during this important month.

@rusnivek

Preparedness class today at HCEMHS

Great class today with the pros from Hamilton County Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

Diverse two classes of participants with spirited discussion on preparedness and resilience.

Great to be teaching in a familiar EOC again.

Speaking of preparedness – Don’t forget that September is just a few short weeks away – National Preparedness Month!!!!!

Don’t forget, because it’s my favorite month.

Busy morning in the St. Louis County EOC

Busy morning in the Emergency Operations Center.

SurteachBallwin

Many of the participants in today’s class will be activated for the upcoming events in St. Louis County and of course the final debates before the election in November 2016.

Glad to see so many partner agencies from across the State of Missouri participating in today’s all-hazards training.

Reporting live from St. Louis County…

@rusnivek

Lots of players in service for the 2016 NBA Champions – The Cleveland Cavaliers!

Big parade today for the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers the NBA Champions!

Early in the morning, the east side Rapid lines appeared to have 1,500 at the end terminals snaking across parking lots in Van Aken Blvd Plaza.

On the west side, people started walking in strange places around the airport. That’s not the best idea. And no, that’s not a sidewalk there.

IMG_3799

Abandoning your car at the cell phone lot isn’t a good idea.

Parking was full to the gills. People were very creative in parking and riding into downtown.

IMG_3800

Inside the terminal, lines resembled Disneyland style waits. Line was snaked down into the entrance of Rapid entry…

IMG_3801

…then lines continued through baggage claim and out past the rental car pickup line. Likely a solid 1,600 waiting to get on the Rapid there.

IMG_3802

Good time to remind everyone “If you see something, say something” – DHS

IMG_3797

Deep inside the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), many people were working hard to keep everything organized and provide information to those teams deployed out in the field.

IMG_3892 IMG_3893 IMG_3894

Trust me, lots of teams were deployed out and ready for immediate action.

IMG_3878

I am especially Proud of Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire, and Cleveland EMS who did their best with the estimated 1.3 million spectators who came into town to witness history and just “hang out”.

Clk4V_QWYAAZoaC

To those 45 families who lost their children during this event, public safety forces worked well together to shelter your kids and protect them from dangers.

Congrats to the Cleveland Cavaliers in their 2016 NBA Championship.

Hope to do it again next year.

Joint SM and Intel SOG reviews for a large upcoming event

Reviewing my SOGs and social media assignments for the all-hazards social media specialists / intel positions in the JIC for an upcoming large scale national event.

An important part of any Joint Information Center (JIC): Now discussing the best non-verbal urgent alert hand signals for all staff deployed to the JIC.

Clearly, Mama PIO wins this round.

PIOs serving our community as well as our nation and of course planning for all kinds of “stuff”.

Great plans with solid PIO peeps makes all the difference.

Trust me on this one.

@rusnivek

My new social media friends in Michigan #NDPTC

Lots of new social media friends in Michigan.

IMG_1857b

Many mahalos to the outstanding hosts from the Michigan State University Police Department and the use of their Emergency Operations Center for our #NDPTC class.

IMG_1858

Our class included a social media inject from FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate.

IMG_1864 IMG_1865

Lots of discussion on data mining, geolocation, and information gathering including a little real-time people uses and their platforms. How was your coffee Valerie?

The power of social media.

IMG_1877

After class was over, many of the participants (Cooper and Valerie) said to check out the famous MSU Dairy Store.

IMG_1883

Dark, quiet, sadly, no one was home. Promised ice cream but I got nothing. #boo

Maybe next time I instruct in Lansing.
