Got to work with Cleveland Police today on an ongoing campaign for safety within the community.

But it was such a nice day today that we decided to roll it out in front of Cleveland Police HQ. FYI-a downtown public open plaza makes it a bit more challenging to do live social media feeds.

No time for funny business because FacebookLive is…well LIVE! So no second takes, redo, or screwing around!

OK, a little screwing around.

Yes, sharing the message on FacebookLive does aggregate the video higher on Facebook users’ feed and notifications – however, the content needs to be engaging. Also, needs a teaser, and lead in, and most importantly, a hook!

The story of the arrest flowed easily and the officers were able to recount the events. Like countless police officers across this country, all are proud of the work they do within every community and continue to provide tireless service to their constituents.

Did you see Cleveland Police talking about N.I.C.E. and their apprehension?

I’ll give you a hint, it had to deal with taking guns off the street…also our hook.

Mean people do not like severe weather warnings

Dear general public: Stop being mean to the National Weather Service, State/Local government public safety, and news reporters.

When “breaking news” occurs pertaining to safety, please adhere to the warnings put forth by the official sources.

Most reporters are generally nice and they want to report the facts.

Press amenities…because they are our partners in safety right? #PIO

Media considerations: Press amenities.

Aside from giving the media the juicy story they crave…we should do a better job in considering their needs during a disaster.

However, in this day/age of media involvement and constant interaction, it would behoove us PIOs to better meet the needs of our partners (that’s right, I said partners) in safety.

For prolonged incidents, it would be nice if your agency:

  • Provided a bunch of plugs and/or outlets to use. Power seems to be a mandatory necessity during every day life. Just look at any airport with weirdos hunched around an open power plug.
  • Setting up a separate WiFi for media use only so they can meet their timely deadlines or push valuable info via social media. They are data hogs just like the rest of us. It has been proven for humans to exist, we need WiFi.
  • Held up white cards for white balance during setup…or better yet warm cards to help the videographers get their color scheme setup right. It does make you look like you just got back from someplace warm and now have a nice tan.
  • A simple cup of coffee would be a welcome olive branch in the midst of disaster/emergency. First informal rule of any disaster or emergency? A cup of coffee regularly ranks high on the scale of requests and necessities from everyone. Available 24/7.

Since we are breaking down barriers, we need to explore a few options to support our partners in safety. Look at this setup…

Let’s work together to better our response and enhance communications skills with just some basic needs for the press. Trust me, a little goes along way.

Flying in February and definitely heading to…

February doesn’t look all that nice. Bitter cold weather here in Region-5.

Well, except for that quick stint at the upcoming FEPA conference in Florida.

This month’s activities include work in FEMA Region-9, Region-3, and of course Region-5
