My social media class today…

Definitely one of the most diverse All-Hazard classes I had in a long while. Participants represented Emergency Management, Fusion Center, Public Works, Land & Natural Resources, Fire, Health Department, EMS, Private sector, HAZMAT, Police, Veteran’s Affairs, Intelligence, US Coast Guard PIAT, National Weather Service, CERT, and PIOs / PAOs.

Jetzzz Jacuzzi for thawing my turkeys! #DFT2015

I’m thawing my turkey now.

Wait, they don’t need the Jacuzzi bubbles?

I better take them out of the wrapper and move them inside in the tub.

By removing the shrink wrap, they should thaw faster right?

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Important tips:

If you drop a frozen solid turkey into the deep fryer, the water frozen in the turkey will react with the oil and cause a rapid reaction that will likely cause explosion.
The overflow and reaction will likely cause peanut oil overflow which can lead to a gigantic fireball when ignited by the open flame.
Peanut oil on your concrete is hard to clean. It will leave a massive smelly stain on your driveway.
Even a partially frozen turkey will retain the water/moisture and initiate the oil + water reaction with possible explosion and fire.

And here I am just thawing my turkey. Maybe I should call my insurance agent.

Well, that escalated quickly.

Maybe I should wear all of my protective gear. Check out this professional. Shorts? No gloves? No problem!

What do the pros have to say? Here’s the NFPA’s fact sheet that says don’t do it.

Grrrrrrrrrreat – I’m gonna die.

Soooooooooo, here’s tonight’s prevention steps:

Thawing my frozen turkey tonight in my fridge.
Checking my fire extinguishers (yes, that’s plural)
Debate on using my talon hook or my halligan for rapid turkey extraction (I think I’m favoring the Talon hook bec it’s longer).

What’s the number for 9-1-1?

Back up plan for disaster this Thursday #DFT2015

So if you wanted to know, I’m a bit nervous for this deep fried turkey on Thursday.

Me? Worry?
#nervous indeed!

What’s the worst that could happen?!?!?!

A. Burn the house down?

B. Burn the neighbor’s house down?

C. Burn the entire block down?

D. All of the above.

Those of you that know my luck, I am sure that I stand a good chance of creating a gigantic mess this Thursday.

As a planner, I like to think I have some backup plans drawn up.

My old friend = new NEOhio ARC Disaster Program Officer

Congrats to my old friend Tim O’Toole – the new Disaster Program Officer for the Northeast Ohio Red Cross!

Tim just retired out of the Cleveland Fire Department as an Assistant Fire Chief…

We worked several large incidents and events for Fire/EMS as well as Emergency Management. Tim is an incredible resource for NE Ohio. I am so glad to see that he will continue to serve the area for the American Red Cross.

Weekend training with Andover Fire and @JumpSeatViews

I had a great time this weekend hanging with the crews from Andover Fire.

Special thanks to Alicen and Chief Robbie Vickery for the invite.

Also, glad to finally meet Charleston Fire (WV) Firefighter Ryan Pennington – most famous by his Hoarders House classes #JumpseatNation .

Ryan has a different perspective on fire and technology – all kinds of stuff you should hear.

Glad to see the lads from Rome Fire too. Too bad no Fred.

I know I know – it’s the weekend. But more training never hurt anyone.

Building new relationships on a Tuesday #NatlPrep

The last Tuesday in the 2015 National Preparedness Month!

Today, look to building new relationships.

Normally, we don’t look outside the realm of daily public safety. It’s easy to talk to Fire/EMS, Law Enforcement, or Public Works Professionals. However, new discussion needs to happen between individuals who can support our mission goals or some unmet needs.

Faith-based organizations are great groups to explore new activities to support your community. In varying degrees, faith-based organizations have the capabilities to support disaster response and recovery operations with food, shelter, and supportive measures. But again, the key is to open discussions BEFORE a disaster so you can evaluate their capability.

Additionally, talk to your local politicians…esp if they are an active part of your Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). These civic-minded individuals have most likely gone through additional preparedness training and can be a great resource for anyone.

Trust me, these are the kinds of people you want to be in close contact with before, during, or after an emergency/disaster.

Don’t wait. Communicate. Make your emergency plan today.

Detailed on a special project for CPD

In the coming months, I’ll be working closely with Cleveland Police on a special project.

Which divisions? I’ll be working closely with their Mounted Unit, K9 Teams, Airport Detail, Bomb Team, SWAT Team, and of course their Air unit (helo).

Awww yeah. All specialty teams!

So yes, you can expect these types of pictures.

640 Insta -> 1080 Insta #Instagram

Instagram just announced that it will go from 640×640 picture posts now to 1080 x 1080 picture posts.

This is most likely attributed to mobile hardware improvements since 2010 and camera phones now take excellent pictures. So to meet the new uploads and higher quality standards, Instagram changed their programming to allow users to include more.

So what does all that gobbledygook actually mean for the Instagrammer?

Before you could only post this type of image with marginal clarity (640 resolution).

Now, you can post this with better quality and better clarity (1080 resolution).

Bigger picture at a standard 1080 resolution, better clarity, and a much better story platform for your audience.

Picture border? Still square.

Time is short, so Gram good stuff.
