2018 Second Quarter #PIO Training at WOIO Channel 19 news #PresidentsDay

Leading off our 2018 2nd quarter Public Information Officer (PIO) Training at WOIO Channel 19/43 (CBS Affiliate).

I’m proud to have so many PIOs from across the State of Ohio and West Virginia discussing current issues and breaking news.

Collaboration and coordination were consistent themes we revisit all the time including Joint Information Center and Joint Information Systems (JIC/JIS). Current news stories like the FL shooting were hot button topics but we also discussed the Boston Bombing, FacebookLive killer, 2016 Republican National Convention, Chardon Shooting, Burke Lakefront plane crash, 3 girls missing for 10+ years, Imperial Ave murders, World Series, and NBA Championships.

But knowing that other PIOs are going through the same issues, we can commiserate and work toward a solution. Yes, of course we did the behind the scenes tours of the studio, desk assignment/reporter bullpen….

…anchor desks, and even popped into a planning meetings for the evening broadcast.

We had so many various disciplines represented.

Special thanks to Anchor Chris Tanaka, Acting News Director Brian Sinclair, Mel Watson, Assignment Editor Shelly Steinmetz, and Reporter Jennifer Picciano. Trust me – it’s great to have media partners working with the NEOhio PIOs!

Live spot with News13 in Cudjoe Key for #Hurricane #Irma Response & Recover #Miami #Tallahassee #Orlando #Tampa

Got a chance to do a live spot with News13 out of Orlando in Cudjoe Key, Florida.

Inside, it’s a whole different view.

As you know, Cat-4 Hurricane Irma made eye wall landfall here with incredible high winds and storm surge leaving heavy devastation throughout this neighborhood.

Lots to see and do esp w/ their field producing and staff onsite. I counted at least 7 cameras for their 6p live shot.

They even had a jib camera.

People will stare including our staff and state director.

Lots of steadycam shots leading into the first interview with former State of Florida Emergency Management Director Bryan Koon.

Next live segment was with our Division Supervisor (DIV/SUP) who happens to be an Federal Coordinating Officer (FCO) member.

Solid questions on response efforts and good inquiries for ongoing operations for recovery phase.

Great interactions and questions from the anchors.

Lots to discuss in response as well as recovery.

As you know, the recovery phase is the hardest part of a disaster.

Glad to be partnering with news agencies who get the story right. The Anchors and producer was super nice…so of course I had to take a selfie w/ them. Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeze!

Making sure we represent FEMA – particularly Branch V Division Alpha.

Reporting live on News13 from Cudjoe Key, Florida…

How KTLA’s Liberte Chan used social media to showcase common sense #CAWx

Looks like KTLA (CW affiliate) made the news again.

Correction: KTLA IS the news.

Anchor Chris Burrous said “We are getting a lot of emails.”

Errrrr, perhaps a different on air line would have been more appropriate. I am thinking that the on air/broadcast decision and handing her a cardigan was a poor choice.

KTLA’s Liberté Chan initially changed out of her original outfit because it got “keyed out” – or rather, didn’t work well with the green screen and the weather report colors. She changed into a black tank dress, writing on Twitter, “Even if it’s early in the AM, can’t beat a black beaded dress.” However, apparently her new glamorous look didn’t go over well, leading to Weekend Anchor Chris Burrous to hand her a sweater in the middle of her weather report.”  – Maria Mercedes Lara (@maria_mercedes)

Here’s how Liberte used FacebookLive, YouTube, and other behind the scenes videos to show viewers the real story behind the wardrobe choice.

More importantly, how accurate are her forecasts?

Liberte-don’t apologize. Give good weather info.

C’mon people. Stop being so delicate.

Waving along on the new SM app ANCHOR!

Playing around on a new social media app called Anchor!

Anchor

Basically, I think it’s a audio twitter.

Unsure on the viability of the platform yet. There might be some huge problems w/ 508 compliance and searching is going to be tough unless you get Siri to listen better and help discern specifics.

First blush? I’m not excited by it.

I know you think I like everything. But I don’t.

Anyone else on Anchor!?

I’ll keep you posted as I test and wave along.
