Reviewing performance evaluations for Hurricane Irma’s response

Spending my Sunday reading through paperwork, demobilization emails, and my performance evaluations from Hurricane Irma’s disaster response.

“Mr. Sur is “a model for the agency.'” – FEMA Division Supervisor Mark Landry (Federal Coordinating Officer cadre).

*blush*

Just glad to be a part of the FEMA disaster response to help my fellow Americans.

Live spot with News13 in Cudjoe Key for #Hurricane #Irma Response & Recover #Miami #Tallahassee #Orlando #Tampa

Got a chance to do a live spot with News13 out of Orlando in Cudjoe Key, Florida.

Inside, it’s a whole different view.

As you know, Cat-4 Hurricane Irma made eye wall landfall here with incredible high winds and storm surge leaving heavy devastation throughout this neighborhood.

Lots to see and do esp w/ their field producing and staff onsite. I counted at least 7 cameras for their 6p live shot.

They even had a jib camera.

People will stare including our staff and state director.

Lots of steadycam shots leading into the first interview with former State of Florida Emergency Management Director Bryan Koon.

Next live segment was with our Division Supervisor (DIV/SUP) who happens to be an Federal Coordinating Officer (FCO) member.

Solid questions on response efforts and good inquiries for ongoing operations for recovery phase.

Great interactions and questions from the anchors.

Lots to discuss in response as well as recovery.

As you know, the recovery phase is the hardest part of a disaster.

Glad to be partnering with news agencies who get the story right. The Anchors and producer was super nice…so of course I had to take a selfie w/ them. Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeze!

Making sure we represent FEMA – particularly Branch V Division Alpha.

Another presser with FL Gov in Key West #PIO Coordination

Started out the morning with a press conference w/ the Governor of Florida again here in Key West. My view from the podium.

Topic today was the Key West economic push “open for business” – glad to see the partnerships of city, county, state, and Federal partnerships making that happen.

PIO pro tip: You’ll want to position your DIV/SUP (FCO Cadre) in the right place. Glad I did.

Money baby….money!

As usual, Gov Scott did some post presser interviews w/ the USAToday, local stations, Orlando etc….And as I said before, we are fortunate to have great working relationships with so many media outlets from Miami…

….Tallahassee…

…and even public radio showed up too!

It’s quite an amazing process to see everyone working together to recover from a major storm here in Florida.

Another Governor and FCO visit with PIO media coordination

Another Florida Governor visit with our senior administration and Federal Coordinating Officer (FCO).

Tight quarters so I had to set the cameras far back.

Little known fact, positioning and seats AT the table is important. A PIOs job is to get the right optic for media.

I even found a reporter shooting stills in between the arms of attendees.

Cramped space makes it tight and a little schwetty!

After the actual meeting was over, we had several post meeting interviews including 10News and Telemundo. Great to see so many news outlets covering the Governor’s message…

…and our message from FEMA.

Solid day on Hurricane Irma disaster response and recovery for Florida.

#PIO is OK!

Working the magic to help promote Response and Recovery efforts here in the Keys –  #KeysRecovery!

@rusnivek

Whoa, that went well… #AlohaFriday

Whoa….whoa…..whoa……

After getting reassigned from the JIC to the FCO, I was evaluated on my performance.

So yeah, that went well.

Great to support the FCO as well as the FEMA Region-1 Incident Management Team (IMAT) this week.

Trust me, without the support of countless PIOs and numerous External Affairs peeps, we could not have accomplished our tasks assigned.

My hope is that we continue to increase our knowledge and expand on ways that we can serve each of our communities daily as well as during any disaster or emergency.

We must relentlessly pursue knowledge from educators who are willing to share their craft with others.

Listen to all of our communities and share kernels of knowledge with others in an open forum so that other PIOs can learn and make good decisions.

It is incumbent upon us to coordinate the response effort for those who have nothing.

And most importantly, it is our duty to serve this great nation.

Demobing now.

Great week.

@rusnivek

Day-4 as the FCO’s Press Secretary

Day-4 and my Federal Coordinating Officer (FCO) wanted to brief the entire Joint Field Office (JFO).

Words of encouragement to rally the team and keep the momentum going is an important part of any situation.

Awesome. I’m just glad to be a part of the team.

No supersoakers or motorized podiums yet.

Second day of being the FCO’s Press Secretary – bring it on Thursday!
