Reporting live from LEX18…

I am definitely using a few examples to help break the ice.

Talofa from TALA FOU News!

But don’t worry, I have a whole library of examples to share – basically, what I’ve learned through experience.

One of the basic tips I talk about is RBF.

Posture is important especially since I look super small behind a podium.

One thing is for sure, on camera, I need to smile more.

How KTLA’s Liberte Chan used social media to showcase common sense #CAWx

Looks like KTLA (CW affiliate) made the news again.

Correction: KTLA IS the news.

Anchor Chris Burrous said “We are getting a lot of emails.”

Errrrr, perhaps a different on air line would have been more appropriate. I am thinking that the on air/broadcast decision and handing her a cardigan was a poor choice.

KTLA’s Liberté Chan initially changed out of her original outfit because it got “keyed out” – or rather, didn’t work well with the green screen and the weather report colors. She changed into a black tank dress, writing on Twitter, “Even if it’s early in the AM, can’t beat a black beaded dress.” However, apparently her new glamorous look didn’t go over well, leading to Weekend Anchor Chris Burrous to hand her a sweater in the middle of her weather report.”  – Maria Mercedes Lara (@maria_mercedes)

Here’s how Liberte used FacebookLive, YouTube, and other behind the scenes videos to show viewers the real story behind the wardrobe choice.

More importantly, how accurate are her forecasts?

Liberte-don’t apologize. Give good weather info.

C’mon people. Stop being so delicate.

Media work today with WKYC #PIO #AlohaFriday

Doing some media stuff today w/ WKYC-3 (NBC Affiliate) in Akron.

Working with WKYC Reporter Jasmine Monroe (@MONROEWKYC) and Photojournalist Carl Bachtel.

Building  relationships and strengthening partnerships are easy ways we as PIOs can enhance our partnerships before a disaster or emergency.

Quick side note: They prefer tweets, Facebook posts, and text messages more than the traditional press release.

We discussed so many other challenges PIO and media teams face including telling the truth, don’t hide from the media, and of course professional respect/courtesy on the scene. Yep. All the same things we talk about in class huh?

#ToldYouSo

And of course it’s #AlohaFriday so you know, I gotta share the Aloha spirit.

Thanks again to Jasmine, Carl, and the news team at WKYC.

Cleveland Police, Cleveland FBI, A Special Wish Foundation, led the charge. But so many public safety agencies and officials that made this day possible.

I can’t thank them enough. All the planning was totally worth it.

CJ – still such a cool dude!

On scene for your scope or live broadcast? Don’t forget to

Just a quick reminder to reporters doing their live shots from the scene AND also PIOs/PAOs who are doing their own Periscope or FacebookLive broadcasts from the scene.

soTQjzO

Remember in Periscope, once you start, you can’t just zoom in frame to exclude redic onscene jokesters.

Remember to think about an alternate broadcast site. Just in case.

Imagine running away (with a selfie stick in hand) to get a less distracting frame…

Love you lots on this rainy Thursday.

2016 South Carolina Business Disaster Recovery Symposium – final thoughts and thanks

Last week, I had the chance to present in front of the leaders of South Carolina in Myrtle Beach at the 2016 South Carolina Business Disaster Recovery Symposium.

It was a packed house! (Photo credit: A. Hardin)

It is outstanding to see everyone, especially private industry building partnerships with governmental agencies. I talked a ton about the use of social media and communications.

Just me, standing on chairs dancing away.

Of course all the news media was there too…

And the reporter?

Trust me, the WPDE (ABC affiliate) News reporter Liz Cooper was hilarious. (Photo credit: A. Hardin)

At this Symposium, not only were they talking about preparedness…

Gahhhh, I love preparedness! My favorite month is……. (Photo credit: A. Hardin)

…we talked a ton about response and RECOVERY!

img_6689

Because it isn’t as sexy, the recovery phase in Emergency Management does not have the same visibility when compared to the Preparedness phase or the Response phase. So this symposium is a perfect opportunity to showcase some messaging and how communications needs to be an integral part of any government or private business during recovery.

And when the Horry County Office of Emergency Management deems your presentation “on fleek” – *swoon*

Mahalos Brooke!

Many thanks to the team at the City of Myrtle Beach. Special Alohas to EM Rockstar Allison and Senior Planner Diane for the invite.
