I have been asked to connect with many of you on LinkedIn. However, it is worth knowing that all Fortune 500 companies use LinkedIn as a recruiting and verification tool so subsequently spelling your actual job title correctly is a good start for the automated systems to match your account.

I get everyone is busy with lots to do. But glaring errors like this are avoidable and as a manager, drove me to reject applications citing inconsistencies in work, history, and documentation.

Look, I don’t have the best spelling either. In fact, I’d blame some of my spelling miscues to #DYAC – but LinkedIn is NOT the place where you are allowed to make these errors.

Just think how detrimental it would be to abbreviate the word Assistant (“Asst”) and forget the “t” – dangerous especially when the HR hiring algorithm forever excludes you from all remaining searches because of vulgarity.

Important four things:

1. Spelling your job title correctly is important.

2. Correct spelling will allow more matches when companies use job algorithms.

3. If you connect, the requesting connection’s spelling error will appear on your timeline to ALL your connections.

4. Spelling errors are a reflection of your professional work.

As a Friday afternoon activity – I’m going to check my LinkedIn account for spelling errors now.

A simple but important factor to remember when using LinkedIn – a professional social media platform for your career and growth.

A few hours ago, Facebook just rolled out a few new features you should be aware of.

First, right below your personal profile picture, you can see they have added an additional sentence so you can add a description about you.

For this specific feature, Facebook has limited you to 101 characters, attempted imbedded emojis or other linking directives (like Twitter handles outside of Facebook world) do not work.

Why is this important? Three things:

It allows Facebook to gather more information about you by allowing you to place topics that best reflect you (aka self-identified targeted words).
They can use these descriptors to serve you more ads and/or grow your networks to those with similar word associations.
Hyperlinks do not work in this descriptor box.

And if you think this is familiar, this description feature box parallels Twitter’s description box which is also located below your twitter name and Twitter handle.

Facebook has also added a new feature where you can add 5 additional pictures about yourself. Think of this as an enhanced profile picture. This allows you to showcase 5 different profiled images of yourself on your personal Facebook page.

This feature obviously makes it look more Tinderish. Gawd – *swipe left* please!

Why more pictures? Better facial recognition. User contributed best profile pictures of themselves for identification.

A few days ago, Facebook crashed as they were pushing for the launch of their 360-video, but if you thought this feature could lead to a few seconds of video profile picture of yourself, you would be SnapChat correct.

Two new features on Twitter….I mean SnapChat….I mean Tinder….I mean Facebook.

You get the idea…Zuck’s blurring the lines again.

Today is National Preparedness Day! #NatlPrep

Ahhhhh, the last day of 2015 National Preparedness Month – THAT MEANS TODAY IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS DAY!!!!

Oh Yeah – You did it!

I know many of you have shared your tips and preparedness efforts with countless others. I am confident that your shared knowledge will pay off as we better prepare our fellow Americans for any disaster or emergency.

Thanks to all of our active partners in public safety. From the Locals to State to Federal partners who have made this month so successful – thank you!

Thank you to my agencies who have allowed me to share my preparedness tips with you.

I only wonder what will 2016 preparedness bring? Hmmm. Here’s a hint…

Final week of 2015 National Preparedness Month!

Don’t freak out, still lots of things to do like download a bunch of free apps for your smart phone!

Here’s an example of a good app from the State of North Carolina Emergency Management Agency’s ReadyNC.

The ReadyNC app It talks about numerous preparedness activities as well as what to do after an emergency. Download it here.

FEMA’s got a great app that you can use to reference great info on disasters and preparedness.

Additionally you can check out their new Disaster Reporter feature, Social Hub, and get free vetted weather alerts. Download it here.

Easy way to inform others? Get out there and present/share your preparedness efforts with all your partners in public safety.

When the power goes out, your flashlights should be ready to go.

Me? Here are just a few of the flashlights I carry with me every day.

Yes, I actually carry 3 different flashlights all the time.

Get reliable rugged flashlights that you can use in any situation.
Double check all flashlights weekly and make sure they are working.
Make sure your flashlights have some texture to the handle as rain can cause you to lose grip.

Never use a generator, gasoline-powered equipment and tools, grill, camp stove, or charcoal burning device inside or in any partially enclosed area, including a basement or garage.

Easy right? Use OUTSIDE!

Big or small…

…don’t forget to get your generator serviced regularly.

Using ICS for wildfires and NIMS common terminology #NatlPrep

CalFire is working a coordinated ICS system to support ground operations #NatlPrep

As you guessed, CalFire has followed NIMS ICS for decades. Based out of McClellan Airfield, they can coordinate tanker/tender operations.

If you’ve ever been in command of an emergency or disaster, it’s hard to coordinate everyone together. This is why it is imperative to collaborate before an emergency. With wildfire operations, you have so many intricate parts over such a vast area – it really is a well orchestrated response.

Providing safety for all professionals is a must. To all the responders out in the field, keep up the good work!
