Happy National Preparedness month! The focus during this second week is on preparing friends and family for different emergencies.

Showcasing the skills of local first responders are incredibly important to adults AND kids. And sharing important information (like a Family Emergency Communications Plan) with first responders is critical.

National Preparedness Month that promotes creating family emergency communications plans.

Often times, we overlook explaining what actually happens during an emergency.

So take the time to explain to your kids that during an emergency, ALL first responders are there to help. And of course, don’t forget to teach your children to dial 9-1-1.

Reminder: When teaching children to call 9-1-1, do not verbally say “Nine-Eleven” as there is not an eleven button on the phone.

Have you seen Mr. August?

Here’s my Uncle Pete doing some #SafetySur stuff for the official Transportation Security Administration (TSA) 2015 pocket calendar. Celebrity status for sure! So if you’ve been through the Honolulu International Airport, you’ve probably seen my Uncle (who has since been promoted to supervisory/management at TSA HNL).

If you were wondering, my Father and Uncle are proud Veterans who served their country. Yep, safety runs in my family’s blood…Safety runs in my blood. #SafetySur

Our family has always served this great country and I am extremely proud of all my family’s accomplishments and their continued vigilance on safety.

In reviewing all the commercials from yesterday’s Superbowl – here’s my top 5.

Targeting their audience, Chevrolet knows how to play off manly pickup trucks. I would buy one if I wasn’t already going to buy a Chevrolet SUV.

I also found myself assessing my home safety measures after Nationwide made me question my ability as a parent. However, it did pull at a different target audience that is normally not addressed during sporting events.

#26: Are ALL your emergency flashlights working? Test em if you got em! #Prepared2014 #NatlPrep

Since it’s a beautiful day, I would be a great day to test all your flashlights.

A few weeks ago, I talked about having flashlights in case of an emergency. Now would be the time to test and make sure each flashlight is in working condition.

Don’t forget about your helmet lights too!

And for my friends in the law enforcement world, don’t forget to check all your weapon lights too.

*I also had to change the batteries in my EOTech too.

Your preparedness actions now will definitely save you time during an emergency.

Reminder again, throw away all candles. Candles are dangerous and can start fires. Flashlights are WAY better for lighting.
