Heading out to teach at FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) this week at the 2016 DHS/FEMA National Training and Exercise Symposium.

I am sure other Emergency Managers can attest, EMI is one of the best places to learn and build relationships with other professionals from across the country.

And yes, it is one of my most favorite places to teach.
Just like last year, I’m stoked to be invited to present again and I’m hoping to see a few friends too.

WhereIsRusnivek? Find_Doc? Hmmmmmm
So if you are headed to the 2016 DHS/FEMA National Training and Exercise Symposium this week, let me know.

Pretty excited to instruct again on Monday at FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute.

My class is the newer National Emergency Management Academies EM Professional Programs (EMPP) – Executive Academy.

I’m truly honored to be chosen to instruct the National Emergency Management Executive Academy that focuses on Strategic Leadership and Critical Thinking. My part? Crisis Communications, Public Information Officer, and Social Media Exercises.

Sunnies on and pin on point!
I hope to see you in class on Monday!
Totes excited.
It’s National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week 2016 (April 10th-16th)!

If you ever sat in a 9-1-1 call center/dispatch center, you know how difficult the job is for every one of these professionals.

I encourage you to take a moment to thank the voice on the other end of the radio.
Awwww yeah! Using gifs for preparedness?
But then this happened:
Holey moley! It’s a good day when FEMA’s @ReadyGov RTs me and @PrepareAthon loves my gifs. #swoon

Now use your new social media powers for good.
Reporting live from the EOC…
Yes it is 2016 National Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Back in 2013, a strong EF-1 hit Pepper Pike (Cuyahoga County, Ohio) in 2013 at 3am.
Luckily, there were no deaths associated with this tornado. Trust me, the damage was unreal.

Yikes is right. But now is the time to review your preparedness kits and double check your family communications plan.
On Wednesday 03-22-16 at 0950 EST, Ohio will have a statewide test of the tornado sirens. This is only a test.
Test your tornado plans by:
These simple tips could help you survive a tornado strike.
More weather info can be found 24/7 by my trusted partners at NWS-CLE.
I hope that you can participate in our statewide tornado drill tomorrow. #SafetySur #NatlPrep #OHWx #severeprep
Last week, I had the chance to present in front of the leaders of South Carolina in Myrtle Beach at the 2016 South Carolina Business Disaster Recovery Symposium.

It was a packed house! (Photo credit: A. Hardin)
It is outstanding to see everyone, especially private industry building partnerships with governmental agencies. I talked a ton about the use of social media and communications.

Just me, standing on chairs dancing away.
Of course all the news media was there too…

And the reporter?

Trust me, the WPDE (ABC affiliate) News reporter Liz Cooper was hilarious. (Photo credit: A. Hardin)
At this Symposium, not only were they talking about preparedness…

Gahhhh, I love preparedness! My favorite month is……. (Photo credit: A. Hardin)
…we talked a ton about response and RECOVERY!

Because it isn’t as sexy, the recovery phase in Emergency Management does not have the same visibility when compared to the Preparedness phase or the Response phase. So this symposium is a perfect opportunity to showcase some messaging and how communications needs to be an integral part of any government or private business during recovery.

And when the Horry County Office of Emergency Management deems your presentation “on fleek” – *swoon*

Mahalos Brooke!
Many thanks to the team at the City of Myrtle Beach. Special Alohas to EM Rockstar Allison and Senior Planner Diane for the invite.

Preaching the good word about Disaster Recovery in South Carolina!
Looking forward to next year!
Happy 2016 National Weather Persons Day!
This year, my favorite Meteorologist is Brooke Bingaman from the NWS-Sacramento Office in California.

@brookeBingaman and @rusnivek
She is an outstanding Meteorologist, rock solid social media peep, amazing presenter, and an extraordinary preparedness expert. Trust me peeps: Brooke. Is. Legit.
Follow her adventures as she’s doing some special event things for a big event this weekend.
BTW-My 2015 favorite Meteorologist Gary Garnet was just promoted as the Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service Cleveland Office in Ohio. Well done Gary!

Participants represented Emergency Management, Fusion Center, Public Works, Land & Natural Resources, Fire, Health Department, EMS, Private sector, HAZMAT, Police, Veteran’s Affairs, Intelligence, US Coast Guard PIAT, National Weather Service, CERT, and PIOs / PAOs.
Top notch peeps from across the country this week!

Special thanks to my old friend Houston Office of Emergency Management Melanie Manville for hosting this new #NDPTC class.
Many Mahalos.
