Media work today with WKYC #PIO #AlohaFriday

Doing some media stuff today w/ WKYC-3 (NBC Affiliate) in Akron.

Working with WKYC Reporter Jasmine Monroe (@MONROEWKYC) and Photojournalist Carl Bachtel.

Building relationships and strengthening partnerships are easy ways we as PIOs can enhance our partnerships before a disaster or emergency.

Quick side note: They prefer tweets, Facebook posts, and text messages more than the traditional press release.

We discussed so many other challenges PIO and media teams face including telling the truth, don’t hide from the media, and of course professional respect/courtesy on the scene. Yep. All the same things we talk about in class huh?

Super proud to see our little 2015 Christmas project #CJSavesCLE get nominated for an Emmy!

Cleveland Police, Cleveland FBI, A Special Wish Foundation, led the charge. But so many public safety agencies and officials that made this day possible.

I can’t thank them enough. All the planning was totally worth it.

Just a quick reminder to reporters doing their live shots from the scene AND also PIOs/PAOs who are doing their own Periscope or FacebookLive broadcasts from the scene.

Remember in Periscope, once you start, you can’t just zoom in frame to exclude redic onscene jokesters.

Remember to think about an alternate broadcast site. Just in case.

Imagine running away (with a selfie stick in hand) to get a less distracting frame…

Providing oversight on today’s US DHS and PS Canada International Exercise #Cause4 #CauseIV

I was requested to support the Department of Homeland Security’s 2016 Science and Technology Cause-4 International Exercise between the United States and Canada today.

United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Public Safety Canada. Yep-international baby!!!!!

But crossing borders is more difficult than you think – esp when dealing with patient privacy, tactical operations, and coordinating efforts amongst ultra type-A personalities.

This is why training and exercising is so crucial to agencies who want to make a different in their communities they serve. This is also why Emergency Management is ideally a solid coordinating entity for this type of response.

In this particular international exercise, emergency response agencies are testing EMS response, transport information, sharing actionable data, social media, and a whole lots others stuff.

I’m just glad to be a small part of the work by so many people and agencies.

I am convinced that through joint exercises, we can build stronger core agencies and be better responsive to emerging threats and hazards.

Waving along on the new SM app ANCHOR!

Playing around on a new social media app called Anchor!

Basically, I think it’s a audio twitter.

Unsure on the viability of the platform yet. There might be some huge problems w/ 508 compliance and searching is going to be tough unless you get Siri to listen better and help discern specifics.

First blush? I’m not excited by it.

I know you think I like everything. But I don’t.

Anyone else on Anchor!?

I’ll keep you posted as I test and wave along.

Will VR in the EOC help?

Can virtual reality help EOC’s coordinate better?

Increase JIC / JIS Communications?

Provide a more accurate briefing w/ tacticians during operational briefings?

Increase understanding with Liaison Officer efforts amongst partners?

Or maybe it’s a space thing or maybe it’s straight up F2F communications is the way Emergency Management needs to continue to build relationships.

Let’s find out and see if this works.

Weird GPS coordinates posted in CNN’s background design

If you happen to watch CNN a lot, you start to notice weird things about the backgrounds designs in their news stories. The blue background in particular.

This one has strange repeating coordinates that scroll upwards behind the dual screen and repeat what appears to be GPS coordinates.

Since I am a certified FEMA Tech Info Specialist (#NerdAlert), I took the liberty to plot them out. The coordinates (N: 40 26.21 x W: 78 58.34) plot out to Tuo Gelaya or Gaizilikezhen in Xinjiang Province in China.

Unknown why this is the static location they picked to be displayed, but that’s where it plots out to.

Why did I even bother to nerd this out? On initial glance, I thought it was close to the NE Ohio area (N41 x W-81), but upon closer inspection, I didn’t see the – sign in the West coordinates. Therefore, it is not in NE Ohio, it is in China.

Glad I got to the bottom of that mystery.

PIO Training in the EOC on #AlohaFriday

Did some external affairs training for a bunch of Public Information Officers (PIOs) today.

A ton of pre-scripted messages came together because the all-hazards PIO collaboratively brought their A-game.

All posts were crafted a specific to the county as well as tied into a few hashtags that will be used for a branded coordinated campaign in preparedness and response upcoming.

Strategic planning at it’s finest.

Sooooooooooo, I got $10 that says their September campaign on preparedness just got a bit heftier.

…we played around with a few newer platforms SnapChat, Periscope, and DubSmash. Ahhhhh, the fun new platforms for PIOs in social media!

Because I know some of you were wondering, I was most definitely repping the classic Friday Hawaii attire.

Isn’t that why peeps always try to schedule classes w/ me on Fridays?
