Who’s ready for some ICS-400 action?

ICS-400 aka Advanced Incident Command System (ICS) is going to be fun!
Hoping to showcase a few successful incidents (like NBA Championships, 2016 World Series, Hurricane Sandy, and of course the Republican National Convention).
Reporting live from the Health Department!
It’s still 2017 National Severe Weather Preparedness Week!
Despite the spectacular summer weather we are experiencing today in March, it is likely that conditions can rapidly change.
While we see this today…

…we might see this kind of weather in the next 24-hours.

While not fashionable, they provide some refuge and partial coverage in case I or my fellow PIOs get caught in some severe weather incident – we are somewhat protected.
And yes, having more than one is advisable as you likely have other family, friends, and/or people that might get wet too.
For more info on how you could better prepare yourself for severe weather, check out the list of preparedness stuff from my friend Jana and her team at Ready.Gov on a kit or an family communications plan.
Be safe and dry peeps!
2017 National Severe Weather Preparedness week.
As we start to experience more rain (April showers) – we need to constantly remind people – IF YOUR WIPERS ARE ON, TURN YOUR HEADLIGHTS ON!

Can you identify which vehicle doesn’t have their headlights on? Kinda hard to spot huh?
Despite daytime on a gloomy day, I think people just forget to turn their headlights on.
Consider using this safety meme whenever it rains.

Trust me, it’s free.
Every state is different so check your state and local laws. Or just turn them on whenever you turn your windshield wipers on.
More free severe weather safety tips this week…
This week is 2017 National Severe Weather Preparedness Week!
Foggy conditions pose a significant danger to motorists as well as pedestrians.
When driving (and flying) leave more room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

I was fortunate to make a stop at the National Interagency Fire Center

This is where the so many HotShots train and hone their skills

The Wildland Firefighter Foundation sought a special way to recognize firefighters after the loss of 14 lives during the 1994 South Canyon Fire. The Foundation partnered with the National Interagency Fire Center to pursue creation of a monument. Generous donations and tireless work of countless volunteers transformed a section of parking lot into a peaceful park. The Monument was officially dedicated in a ceremony on May 25, 2000.

So many placards displaying fallen Firefighters.
My SnapChat has a more in-depth story including better views w/ Spectacles.
If you ever get out to Idaho, check it out.
Be safe peeps.
Leading off another Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) G-0291: Joint Information System / Joint Information Center Planning for Tribal, State, and Local PIOs.

We have a few new additions to our class – who hail from across Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia.

Glad to have so many pros with us in class…esp for #AlohaFriday – yeah baby!

PC: J. Beckett
Always an Aloha shirt on Fridays.
Lots of group work and discussion as everyone contributes information to better their communities.
It is helpful because our participants have diverse backgrounds.

Almost all Emergency Support Functions (ESFs) were represented.

This allowed us to have an in-depth discussion and think outside the box to solve various in class table top exercises.

Instructors we able to facilitate discussion among groups providing the opportunity to enhance their response with immediate communication strategies and tactics for emergency notification.

Also lots of discussion of the benefits and pitfalls of the JIC vs the JIS.

Additionally, the class wanted to see a few pictures from our Joint Information Center (JIC) during the 2016 RNC (2016 Republican National Convention).

We obliged and showed a few pictures.

Glad to have the chance to present before the PIOs from Athens County and beyond.

Special thanks to Dan in coordinating this training with Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Proud to have so many different agencies represented.
Looking forward to working with each of these PIOs in a JIC!
Dear general public: Stop being mean to the National Weather Service, State/Local government public safety, and news reporters.
When “breaking news” occurs pertaining to safety, please adhere to the warnings put forth by the official sources.

Again, stop being mean!
Most reporters are generally nice and they want to report the facts.

For your protection, heed all safety warnings from official sources.
Hello Wednesday! Getting a chance to teach my favorite advanced class – PER-344: Social Media Tools and Techniques at the State of New Mexico Department of Public Health.

Whohoo!

The engaging in-class activity in the afternoon is a great way to get you to think outside of the box…

…and force you to #totes enhance your social media game.

So happy to see numerous peeps attending today’s class.

This course is also very valuable to support upcoming Full Scale Exercise Vigilant Guard with the National Guard too.
