DHS requesting social media info revision on ESTA and I-94W forms

Interesting to see that DHS is requesting a question be added to the ESTA and into the I-94W English (11-11) FINAL (reference only) form.

Please enter information associated with your online presence—Provider/Platform—Social media identifier. It will be an optional data field to request social media identifiers to be used for vetting purposes, as well as applicant contact information. Collecting social media data will enhance the existing investigative process and provide DHS greater clarity and visibility to possible nefarious activity and connections by providing an additional tool set which analysts and investigators may use to better analyze and investigate the case.

Current Actions: This submission is being made to extend the expiration date with a change to the information collected as a result of adding a question about social media to ESTA and to Form I-94W, as described in the Abstract section of this document. There are no changes to the burden hours or to the information collected on Form I-94, or the I-94 Web site.

Type of Review: Revision.

Affected Public: Individuals, Carriers, and the Travel and Tourism Industry.

Doctoring images to incite fear = not cool #SMEM #PIO #RNCINFO #Safety-SM-16-004

Lots of BSery going on.

@TKDMike pushed this image out on 07-16-16 at 1902 EST trying to portray that Cleveland is burning dumpsters tonight for the 2016 Republican National Convention.

CnhZTSbUkAEm_7F

Orig tweet w/ image found here

That image looked weird to me.

So let’s look a little closer shall we?

A simple online search found this exact image used multiple times.

Once as a meme for protesters in the UK

zX_0CjO37DFTB_Y4tu9IRqWkGMSqCDOCBbD4aWHhobo

Made into a UK Meme

Yep. That’s weird.

Then the same image, slightly better quality found on imgur from 10 months ago.

jeNxFNG

From imgur

Again, double weird.

Then I found the original.

Game-7 from the Stanley Cup in 2011. Appropriate photo credit to Brian Neumann.

In the initial @tkdmike post from 07-16-16, he has embellished the image and added the Quicken Loans Arena logo and an RNC2016 logo to the dumpster. Additionally, behind the gal on the right is also a photoshopped sign for Trump2016. **Clearly against the orig photo by Brian CA Neumann on 06-16-2011 on Flickr. The sign should not read “Trump 2016”, it should read “Sunrise Kitchens” – also note the hockey jersey.

Doctoring images to push political agenda or incite fear = not cool.

Canada image from 2011 –> fake it to be a Cleveland image in 2016 = not cool.

It’s going to be a long NSSE.

How Emily Austen got fired in ~25 min bec of FacebookLive #SMEM #PIO Safety-PIO-SM-16-003

Fox Sports reporter Emily Austen made the news…yes, she was the news this week when she FUBARed her career on FacebookLive. (If it helps, fast forward to 25:33)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMvCIgX_kMs

Wait, did Emily just say “Like, I didn’t even know Mexicians were that smart.”

WTF!?!?!?!?

kSMDH

SMDH

Fox Network immediately fired her because of her comments on FacebookLive. Let that sink in for a moment. Fox Network fired her for all the inappropriate comments in this unaffiliated FacebookLive broadcast.

Yeppers-you can get fired for stuff you do on social media.

To be fair to her, Austen did post a statement about it here.

But, to add more fuel to this fire, here’s a story about it from Complex News.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrT46AL4cSU

Again, I repeat:

  • You can lose your job over a picture.
  • You can lose your job over a 140-characters (tweet).
  • And yes, you can lose your main job on a couch during a live broadcast.

All thanks to social media.

For more case studies on others who lost their jobs because of social media, check out this link.

In this case, what would have helped?

  1. Not saying dumb things.
  2. A behind the scenes PIO to help coordinate conversation.
  3. Sticking to the “script” of the interview/session.
  4. Professionally maintaining topic relevance and choice of words.
  5. Sticking to communications strategy and abiding by identified corporate Policy/Procedures and SOPs/SOGs.

Or just straight up – don’t say inappropriate things.

Now phleeeze – go out there and use your social media live broadcasting powers for good!

How KTLA’s Liberte Chan used social media to showcase common sense #CAWx

Looks like KTLA (CW affiliate) made the news again.

Correction: KTLA IS the news.

Anchor Chris Burrous said “We are getting a lot of emails.”

Errrrr, perhaps a different on air line would have been more appropriate. I am thinking that the on air/broadcast decision and handing her a cardigan was a poor choice.

KTLA’s Liberté Chan initially changed out of her original outfit because it got “keyed out” – or rather, didn’t work well with the green screen and the weather report colors. She changed into a black tank dress, writing on Twitter, “Even if it’s early in the AM, can’t beat a black beaded dress.” However, apparently her new glamorous look didn’t go over well, leading to Weekend Anchor Chris Burrous to hand her a sweater in the middle of her weather report.”  – Maria Mercedes Lara (@maria_mercedes)

Here’s how Liberte used FacebookLive, YouTube, and other behind the scenes videos to show viewers the real story behind the wardrobe choice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu4vyTMXZYk

More importantly, how accurate are her forecasts?

Liberte-don’t apologize. Give good weather info.

C’mon people. Stop being so delicate.

Providing oversight on today’s US DHS and PS Canada International Exercise #Cause4 #CauseIV

I was requested to support the Department of Homeland Security’s 2016 Science and Technology Cause-4 International Exercise between the United States and Canada today.

dhs_st_logo_blue

United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Public Safety Canada. Yep-international baby!!!!!

But crossing borders is more difficult than you think – esp when dealing with patient privacy, tactical operations, and coordinating efforts amongst ultra type-A personalities.

IMG_1095

This is why training and exercising is so crucial to agencies who want to make a different in their communities they serve. This is also why Emergency Management is ideally a solid coordinating entity for this type of response.

IMG_9303

In this particular international exercise, emergency response agencies are testing EMS response, transport information, sharing actionable data, social media, and a whole lots others stuff.

IMG_9292

I’m just glad to be a small part of the work by so many people and agencies.

post-1

I am convinced that through joint exercises, we can build stronger core agencies and be better responsive to emerging threats and hazards.

Waving along on the new SM app ANCHOR!

Playing around on a new social media app called Anchor!

Anchor

Basically, I think it’s a audio twitter.

Unsure on the viability of the platform yet. There might be some huge problems w/ 508 compliance and searching is going to be tough unless you get Siri to listen better and help discern specifics.

First blush? I’m not excited by it.

sheldon-gif

I know you think I like everything. But I don’t.

Anyone else on Anchor!?

I’ll keep you posted as I test and wave along.

A newspaper printed social media apps?

Interesting that a newspaper printed this.

12963495_1147381295280352_3290210647902816679_n

By the time this story went to press, there were about 293,789 other apps that came popped.

Also, it’s weird that a newspaper PRINTED pictures of these apps. #NotEnoughAdvertisement

IMHO, I also believe they should add a few more to this list.
