Leading off another Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) G-0291: Joint Information System / Joint Information Center Planning for Tribal, State, and Local PIOs.

We have a few new additions to our class – who hail from across Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia.

Glad to have so many pros with us in class…esp for #AlohaFriday – yeah baby!

PC: J. Beckett
Always an Aloha shirt on Fridays.
Lots of group work and discussion as everyone contributes information to better their communities.
It is helpful because our participants have diverse backgrounds.

Almost all Emergency Support Functions (ESFs) were represented.

This allowed us to have an in-depth discussion and think outside the box to solve various in class table top exercises.

Instructors we able to facilitate discussion among groups providing the opportunity to enhance their response with immediate communication strategies and tactics for emergency notification.

Also lots of discussion of the benefits and pitfalls of the JIC vs the JIS.

Additionally, the class wanted to see a few pictures from our Joint Information Center (JIC) during the 2016 RNC (2016 Republican National Convention).

We obliged and showed a few pictures.

Glad to have the chance to present before the PIOs from Athens County and beyond.

Special thanks to Dan in coordinating this training with Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Proud to have so many different agencies represented.
Looking forward to working with each of these PIOs in a JIC!
Day-2 of FEMA / Ohio EMA Basic Public Information Officer course.
Many of our participants wanted to know what is was like to implement a media pool for an international audience so we obliged by showcasing the May 2013 landmark case of the Cleveland Survivors’ Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight.
After discussing interview tips, we reviewed all media interviews. Everyone got a chance to openly review their newly acquired PIO interview skills.

PC: E. Creech
Sharp PIOs providing some sharp witty responses to the fictitious disaster.
Great discussion on redirection…

…and transitional phrasing or bridging…

…and of course the “no comment” conundrum.

All these in class activities help better our PIO on camera TV interviewing skills.
Meanwhile, a few participants tried to manually control the interview by holding my mic hostage.
Looking forward to our G291: Joint Information System / Joint Information Center class tomorrow on #AlohaFriday.
January was fast paced but February 2017 is going to be lots more hustle too!
In the first week, its another great Basic Public Information Officer’s course and Joint Information Center course at Wayne Township Fire. Love me some Region-5 baby!
Second week, I’ll be leading the Incident Management Team Logistics Section Chief Course in Dayton – the home of Ohio Urban Search and Rescue Task Force-1 (OH-TF-01). Teaching FEMA EMI courses are super fun. Week long Logistics is AWESOME!
Third week, we will be back in Athens, Ohio bringing our Basic Public Information Officer’s course (G-290) and Joint Information Center course (G-291) with one of my favorite instructors Erica aka Mama PIO in Region-5 again!
Fourth week, I head back to Centennial to debut a brand new course for FEMA/NDPTC on social media. Looking forward to seeing my Colorado peeps again at the state Emergency Operations Center. Region 8 in the hizzouse!

Busy February! Hope to see you my classes!
Solid Thursday talking about Joint Information Centers (JICs) and Joint Information Systems (JISs).

Additionally, seeing how our Federal partners build into local and state response is key to showcase how everyone works together.
It is imperative that we continue to push the efforts of our all-hazards partners in public safety to ensure our community ability to return to normal after any disaster.

Later this afternoon, we’ll dive into some social media tech stuff including a bit on intelligence. Hope to share the power of social media with my new peeps.

Also, I hope they now use their social media powers for good!
Did someone say PIO?
Don’t be scared, on camera interviews starting in 3…2..1…

And yes of course, you gotta look good for your interview right?

We definitely evaluated all interviews – open discussion with all class PIOs provides us the ability to enhance our skills and concrete our strengths.
Note: On camera interviews are only one part of the PIOs role on any disaster or emergency.

We are fortunate to have Paris from RTV6 (ABC affiliate) stop by to have an open discussion with our class.

These kinds of open dialog helps new PIOs understand the media needs as well as their short deadlines.

Making sure our new PIOs get a flow for External Affairs dynamics is important as well as numerous discussions on strategies. And of course facilitating discussion on networking and training is totes important.
Great day of sharing the good word and supporting so many PIOs!
Doing some PIO camera work today. Don’t be nervous!

Even for the most experienced professional, on camera interviews are challenging, but the more you do them, the easier it gets. Additionally, we were fortunate to have several participants with past media (TV and newspaper) experiences to share with the class too.
Social media? You bet! We talked a ton about SnapChat too.

Also had some fun with FacebookLive.

On the spot interviews showcasing the new Quint.

Great class!
Detailed to this station! Who is ready for some PIO training?!?

But first, lemme go on a run.

Afternoon will be filled with Crisis Communications and mock interviews.
Today I’ll be supporting fellow PIOs for Cleveland Water as they host open forum meetings with the community.

You can check out my periscope broadcast here.
Or, you can check out the Cleveland Water FPV FacebookLive camera here.
At the end, I’ll be doing some social media live broadcast stuff as well as some fun interview work with other PIOs and Commissioner.

BTW-2016 World Series game-3 is tonight in Chicago.

As always #GoTribe #RallyTogether
