2016 World Series Game-2 field work for PIOs #GoTribe #RallyTogether

Doing some Public Information Officer (PIO) stuff during the 2016 World Series was fun.

Like in any deployment, don’t forget to sign in, or else Jobu will chase you down!

2016 World Series game-2: Chicago Cubs vs Cleveland Indians

Don’t think it’s all glamour, PIOs spend gobs of time crafting specific messages tailored to each situation.

In the end, ESF-15 and all PIOs/PAOs are there to support all of our partners in public safety.

Some transitional or bridging phrases because you know… #PIO #PAO #ESF15

Just watched a ton of interviews on TV. So, is “You know…” the new “Um….”

uh-microphone

C’mon peeps. We are all capable of doing better.

ron-burgundy-2

For those that need a little help, reference your cue/quiet cards with transitional/bridging phrases.

  • “We need to focus in on…”
  • “Let me reiterate the main problem here is…”
  • “Another factor to consider is…”
  • “Oh, that reminds me…”

Remember, your audience doesn’t know…so help them, well, you know…

Periscoping Public Safety with Animals

I was discussing some Periscope tips with a few Police PIOs on an upcoming spot with the mounted unit. Great key points in the story, but I cautioned them on the variability and unpredictability of filming with animals.

BunniesHumpingNews

Try your best to limit the view to close ups and reduce the amount of wide shots.

Also, consider having cut plan…aka alternate plan in case “stuff” happens.

(I should have posted this on Wednesday huh?)

PIO Tip: Frame your shot and reduce your onscene variables

I was finishing up my AARs and found a picture from the last night of the Republican National Convention (RNC).

Quick tip for you PIOs doing field reporting: Frame your shot.

IMG_5773

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams doing an interview with Time Magazine. Obvious chalked roadway with profane statement behind him. Videographer is recording at an upward angle to frame his subject.

During the RNC, we found that it was critical to frame the shot. Onscene shots were particularly tough because so many activist groups had signs, chalked, or painted words that are inappropriate for pictures or even worse yet, uncontrolled live broadcast hits (Periscope or FacebookLive or YouTubeLive).

Additionally, live outdoor broadcasts from the scene are challenging because it is difficult to control the natural and man-made variables.

So as PIOs we need to reduce any signs, ropes, wires, etc….that could affect your framed shot.

OnCameraDangers

Trust me, reduce the amount of variables to a bare minimum.

Focus your energy in delivering your message. #PIO

Showcasing some of the specialty teams in play for the upcoming RNC #RNCINFO

Press event yesterday morning to showcase all the equipment and teams that could be utilized and deployed out for next week’s Republican National Convention (RNC) in Cleveland.

Cleveland Police Sgt Jen Ciaccia lead the effort that started at 0600.

After events in Dallas, the bomb robot was of great interest to everyone.

IMG_5014

If you take the time to understand the technology, this is an invaluable piece of equipment to any police department.

IMG_5015

Some reporters wanted to try to wear the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) suits.

IMG_5022

NBC Nightly News Correspondent Jacob Rascon even hoped on the Mounted Unit to see what it was like to ride above the crowds.

IMG_5027

Nice guy.

IMG_5026

Don’t worry, Cleveland Police’s Mounted Unit doesn’t j-walk…

IMG_5030

…like you, they use the cross walk.

Bike patrol officers from across the state including Blue Ash Police and Akron Police were out running training throughout the city.

IMG_5044

It’s great to have so many law enforcement agencies working together to ensure safety for all participants.

Additionally, lots of pros working behind the scenes making magic happen.

IMG_5029

Proud to have a so many Public Information Officers (PIOs) working together in the Cleveland Joint Information Center (JIC).

Looking forward to more fun tomorrow.

And yes, it’s t-minus 3 days…

Teaching the brand new DHS/FEMA Basic Public Information Officer Course

Awwww yeah! This past week, I got a chance to teach part of the brand new DHS/FEMA G0290: Basic Public Information Officer Course!

IMG_9144

Formerly known as G-290 course, this is the new FEMA Basic Public Information Officer course taught across the country for all public safety and emergency management professionals.

Thanks again to the Kentucky Emergency Management Agency and KESC for allowing me the opportunity. Also, special thanks to the ever fashionable Mike from NIOA.

Frominos

Shakas because we are reporting live from Kentucky…
