Returning from #GSMCon2017

Well, I guess it’s time to “head back from Dallas”

Let me get comfortable in my exit row seat

Special thanks to Sarah Gamblin-Luig (@SirenLadySTL) for chaperoning my quick 2-day trip for the 2017 Government Social Media Conference (#GSMCon2017) in Texas.

“Attending” the #GSMCon2017 in Dallas #coasttocoastkevin

Today, I am “attending” the Government Social Media Conference (#GSMCon2017) in Dallas.

Thanks to a few late night ideas spurred by Maryland Emergency Management’s Emily Allen (@allen_emilym) and Garden Grove Fire California Capt Nguyen (@PIOthanhn).

Bahhahahaahaha.

Sounds like an interesting talk from Mary Jo Flynn and Sarah Miller now on Social Media and UAS use by government officials.

Ahem. Well, what can I say?

Maybe a few safety messages on keeping your mobile devices charged…..Wait, Lazo can you help?

I tried to win a few raffle prizes, but sadly that didn’t happen.

While on the step and repeat, Conference host Kristy Dalton is giving me the look…the look to attend #GSMCon2018 too.

I spy, with my right eye…Bronlea too!

Reporting live from…..well Dallas!

Best Practices for Incorporating…

A few good friends sent me the new Best Practices for Incorporating Social Media into Exercises released by the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology First Responders Group.

2017-April-Best-Practices-Incorporating-Social-Media-Into-Exercises-508

Click on the link above to download the entire pdf.

Lots of good reading info in there from the International CAUSE IV experiment that I contributed in Michigan and our international partners in safety – Canada Public Safety.

3 Regions in April including my favorite social media course

Spring has sprung and April is here!

First and second week will be packed with planning meetings for upcoming functional and full scale exercises as well as some follow up on upcoming Emergency Management / PIO classes and national conferences. Lots of work for classroom fun stuff. Additionally I’ll finally get a chance to sit down with some SES folks for strategic planning career development.

Third week will be in Florida (Region-4) teaching my favorite #NDPTC advanced social media course – PER-344 Social Media Tools & Techniques. Whoop whoop!

The Fourth week will be a busy one as we finalize another social media course for FEMA certification at Sacramento County’s EOC in California (Region-9). Then double back to some of my favorite peeps from Georgia (Region-4) for more Emergency Management preparedness courses.

Region-5, Region-9, and Region-4 = Lots of great classes upcoming.

You know me, I’m just glad to serve constituents who make a difference in their communities every single day.

Advanced Social Media classes in Idaho on PI day (3.14)! #NDPTC

Starting off this morning teaching my most favorite advanced class…

Social Media Tools & Techniques!

Lots of things to share and showcase in the Public Information Officer (PIO) and ESF-15: External Affairs realm.

Social Media tools including several Augmented Reality apps that use pre-existing hardware that could be useful for any operational and tactical operations.

Additionally many Emergency Operations Center across the country could use these technologies to augment their response and increase their situational awareness / common operating picture (SA/COP).

Great to work with so many pros who are willing to contribute to the All-hazards response.

We ran through a few crisis communications exercises activities utilizing the new social media tools we showcased.

Great conversation with participants from across Idaho and Washington.

Glad to see creative minds formulating emergency communications plans for the preparedness and response phase..

Special thanks to Ada County Emergency Management and EM Director Joe for their hospitality.

Special thanks to @AdaCountyEM Social Media Coordinator Myla for help in the EOC too. #Spectacles

Many mahalos to all my new peeps from across Idaho and FEMA Region 10.

Now use your new social media powers for good!

@rusnivek

First looks at my #Spectacles From #SnapChat Part-1

Here’s my first observation with SnapChat’s #Spectacles

They are big. Here’s a comparison from my Spectacles vs an ordinary pair of Oakley Holbrook sunglasses.

Vs

Obv featuring an Engine and a Squad.

Yeah yeah, I know they are now called Snap, but I believe if you reference “Snap” this is what most everyone thinks.

More tomorrow peeps.

@rusnivek

Marching right in…is March!

Marching right in…is March!

In the first full week, as 1Q starts to close out, I will be finishing up my yearly requirements including compliance and yearly required classes/re-certifications from the agencies I represent.

Second week, I’ll head to Boise to teach some advanced social media courses. Keep your eyes peeled for me in Idaho!

Third week, I’m headed down to Anniston for some FEMA Mission Ready Training with my favorite HQ peeps. Now you know, I wanted to attend the 2017 NEMA Mid-Year Planning Conference, but I just can’t swing it this year.

Then the fourth week, is packed with teaching some new peeps from Woodlawn, everyone’s favorite, ICS-400: Advanced Incident Command System (ICS).

Brand new FEMA #NDPTC Social Media Engagement Strategies at State of Colorado EOC

I am honored to bring a brand new social media course out: FEMA/NDPTC Social Media Engagement Strategies

This particular social media course has been under development for the past few years. With it’s first delivery in the Pacific NW in 2015. But the best part is today’s course is in Colorado!

At the heart of FEMA Region 8 – these peeps know their stuff.

State of Colorado PIO Micki Trost welcoming all the participants in the class.

Many of the PIOs in class today are from almost all ESFs including a strong contingent from ESF-01: Transportation!

Great partnerships with local, state, Federal partners, and DoD representatives in class today.

I also got a chance to share my field deployable PIO Kit (aka my man bag / man purse / European carry all)

Great discussion on social media and how to increase engagement on various platforms including Slackk, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, Musicaly, SoundFile, and of course a few tips on how to have a corrrdinated approach to dissemination of information to external partners as well as internal employees. Remember, all internal employees (if they consent) could be brand ambassadors of their agency.

Active in class discussion as well as spirited activity in class w/ EOC and VOST teams can mutually benefit if both understand the needs and requests.

And also a VERY special shout out to the courses creator: Cheryl “HAZMAT MiniVan” Bledsoe. #famous

Obv, MaryJo and I are stoked to be the first instructors to bring this to Colorado!

Stay safe peeps, it’s only Wednesday.

Engage on social media like a MoFo and always do good stuff.
