Social Media Engagement Strategies for the AZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ peeps!

Thirsty Thursdays are here and we’re popping another Social Media Engagement Strategies class here at Pima County EMA (Arizona).

And of course we gotta keep it real to the course creator – our good friend Cheryl Bledsoe!

For those that know the origins of this picture, know how important it is for us to keep it consistent.

As instructors, we often love to incorporate pop culture references into class. This class was no different.

Oh yeah! Luckily it isn’t Wednesday.

So great to see collaboration with the NPS Wildfire folks. Also great to see a fellow Type-1 PIOs in the audience too.

Great minds think alike as we continue to prepare and engage various audiences…including during non-fire season.

Not only are we prepping tweets and Facebook posts, we are also diving deep into strategy.

Plans are soooooo important esp when we focus in on social media. Yes, many PIOs are responsive, but we also need to be strategic about our operations. When participants walk away from this class, they have in hand, a starting point for social media strategy that includes their partner agencies.

Since we can’t just run and gun, we must not cross the streams.

Ray, just don’t look at the trap.

Outstanding discussion amongst all participants as we share success stories and challenges we face daily on social media.

More importantly, it’s good to see genuine smiles in class. Lotsa smiles.

Facilitating discussion helps enhance relationships with all providers in disaster response and recovery. Additionally, people can address gaps and maybe…MAYBE find an agency that can assist or mutual aid in to fill that shortfall.

Starting the January ICS-300 course at our house!

Another great start to our ICS-300 course! Welcome to my house – DuPage County OHSEM!

Packed class with sooooo many public safety partners here.

This class has a bunch of activities so our participants can apply what they are learning immediately to the fictitious town of Central City.

Note: Central city is a fictitious town that we use in almost all of our classes. It’s not a real place. However, if it was, I would definitely not want to live there. Or eat the Coho salmon from there. Just sayin…

Great engagement from everyone here.

Proud to be hosting this course at our house.

Morning meetings w/ Chicago Police PIOs at CPD HQ

Morning meetings today with all the Chicago Police Department Communications Team at HQ!

Sharing some tips and news in workshop format about ongoing public safety operations as well as coordinated efforts will help all of us as PIOs. #PIAT

All the coordination enhances our ability to be a more prepared deployable asset to support other agencies of the like.

And for those wondering, the world of PIOs, PAOs, and ESF15 is very small. No matter the size of the disaster or hurricane, every good PIO knows other good PIOs.

Great to meet the team from CPD and looking forward to working with each other to support the mission of public safety for municipalities across this great country.

Special shout out to the CPD team Anthony, Tom, Michael, and Luis.

Me? Yep-proud to continue to serve so many great communities.

Already December 2018? Are you serious?!?!?

How in the world is it December already!

First week will be several NIMS/ICS courses for our County ESF-3 partners, few other Emergency Management courses for IL Region-9, and a Emergency Management/Health Department functional exercise w/ our CERT Teams for medication POD distribution.

Second week our office is hosting another FEMA G0289: PIO Awareness course and then a fun PIO Workshop at ABC7-Chicago on Friday.

Third week will be the FEMA G0290/G0291: Basic PIO Course and JIC/JIS course. Without a doubt a full class w/ wait list. Glad to finally nail this one for all of our partners in public safety, Cheers for Murray and Corey for championing this for everyone too.

Fourth week appears to be Christmas so likely yearly closeouts and wrap ups.

Monday = Debris Management!

Starting out this week talking about Debris Management and the importance of Public Works and Logistics!

Yeah, doesn’t seem like a fun topic right? But if you look at the real deal, this is how Emergency Managers earn their keep. Cause it’s not in the response phase.

Emergency Managers work the magic in the recovery phase.

Collaboration in class means that we hash out a few issues prior to the actual disaster.

Working closely with all factions in government will ensure a smooth response from everyone involved.

The faster you get your community back on track, the better your community will be. Building resilient communities is critical!

You should address 10 major factors as part of your debris plan.

Is this difficult? Most definitely. Here’s a picture from the USVI in 2017.

Here’s a picture from the USVI in November 2018.

Can you think of any planning challenges? Any logistical issues? Any major environmental issues?

If you said a million yeseseses to the above three questions, you need to address your debris management plan with your Emergency Management official.

Day-1 of the OhioEMA Basic #PIO class in Summit County

Packed house as we start another Ohio EMA Basic Public Information Officer Course in Summit County, Ohio!


Special thanks to Jena and all the pros at Summit County Emergency Management Agency.


Great diverse crowd from various backgrounds allow us to have wide discussions on topics. With so many disciplines represented, we had a deep dive into lots of classroom tabletop activities for PIOs.


Remember, its our job to align ourselves with those SMART Objectives, then analyze our audiences, then write specific messaging to our targets audiences.

Easy peasy right? In person classes like the Social Media for Disaster Response and Recovery as well as Social Media Tools & Techniques. And of course don’t forget all those fun online FEMA Independent Study classes too. (all classes are no cost)


And of course we did the oncamera PIO interviews today. Staple of our class!


Last part of the day, we hit the social media section hard cause we talked a ton about case studies highlighting success stories and pitfalls in social media use. And of course, don’t forget to get #slizzerd

Final day of Ohio EMA’s Emergency Planning Course

Second and final day of our Ohio EMA Emergency Planning course!

We are going to dive deep into CPG-101 and talk about how we can increase our ability to write better EOP base plans and enhance our annexes.

All four groups firing all the way as they work through challenges in formulation of SMEs for plans.

Dynamic chatter esp focusing in on American Red Cross and Emergency Management when it comes to bringing people to the table.

Dove deep into how CPG101 applies, incorporating the NRF, lots on NIMS compliance, and of course ICS requirements. Discussion also lead to a few case studies including Hurricane Jacob Cat-5 to Cat-2 hit.

Also fortunate to have key players from CERT, HAM, EM, and law enforcement at the table discussing challenges with paid vs volunteer staffing and accounting for resources.

I want to give a major shoutout to Alicen and Tim for their hospitality this week for the Ohio EMA G-235 course. Most gracious and hospitable course coordinators.

Now go forth and formulate good EOPs!
