Some helpful social media terminology #SMEM

I’m often asked about terminology found on social media. Here are the 12 most commonly asked terms (as of 11-06-15):

1. Squad

Definition: Your crew, your team, your trusted agents aka your BFF (Best Friends Forever)

SM example: Heading to the White House w/ my squad. #SquadGoals

2. Ghosting

Definition: Ending a relationship by completely ignoring the other person on all social media platforms.

SM example: Dayum! Chastity ghosting Frank because he cheated.

3. Bye, Felicia

Definition: A term used to be dismissive of someone first popularized by the hit movie Friday (1995). Thanks for the team from MT on this info.

SM example: Hold up, you said you were going but now you are bailing? Not cool. Bye, Felicia.

(Note: There is some discussion on the possibility of this statement being perceived as degrading females)

4. On fleek

Definition: On point, looking good

5. Cray

Definition: Short hand abbreviation of crazy.

6. BAE

Definition: Before anyone else or a term of affection to another person

SM example: “he was supposed to be bae a long time ago but I got friendzoned so now we’re bffs but you know, that’s better than nothing so.” -(@sosatooturnt_ on 12-22-14 at 0405)

7. FOMO

Definition: Fear of missing out

SM example: It’s cool, I’ll just sit here nursing my FOMO.

8. Turnt

Definition: excited or super hyper

SM example: He dispatched the heavy rescue team?!? This crash is bout to get turnt!

9. #FF or #FridayFollow

Definition: Primarily on Twitter, this trendy hashtag is used on Fridays to recommend to others to follow.

SM example: #FF #FridayFollow @ReadyGov @PrepareAthon @FEMA @DHSGov @DisasterCTR @TEEX_NERRTC @CDPFEMA @CTOSRadNucTrng @NCBRT @SERTC_training

10. “Swipe-right or swipe-left”

Definition: An action used on the social media app Tinder for social acquaintances. The in app action of swiping on the picture to the left denotes you do not want to have interactions with the person (aka NOPE) and the action of swiping on the picture to the right denotes you have interest in the person featured (aka LIKE).

SM example: Brandy is so fake and under qualified, definitely swipe-left.

11. Troll

Definition: A person who only engages online discussion to create controversy.

SM example: Donald is not helping this convo at all. He’s just being a troll.

12. Doe

Definition: An abbreviation of the word though.

A few other acronyms that still pop up:

  • ICYMI: In case you missed it
  • TBT: Throwback Thursdays
  • MCM: Man Crush Mondays
  • NBD: No big deal
  • WCW: Woman Crush Wednesdays
  • NSFW: Not safe for work
  • AFAIK: As far as I know
  • FBO: Facebook official
  • IRL: In real life
  • YOLO: You only live once
  • SMH: Shaking my head
  • LMK: Let me know

Like many social media apps, these terms will likely expire and new ones will come up.

For now, I hope this helps discern some social media terminology.

October has the big four: 3-9-5-NCAP #SURINDC

As National Preparedness Month closes, my October 2015 schedule is going to be very challenging. And as you know, I have to win. Here’s the plan:

First week: I’ll be in Carlisle, Pennsylvania presenting on Social Media in disasters. Pope out, Sur in! Glad to be back in Region-3.

Second week: I’ll be headed back to the Silicon Valley area presenting on social media specifically for large event planning and monitoring (because it’s all about the L right? Wait, it’s all about the 5-0 right?) I also hope to catch up to one of the VIPs at Intel. Since retiring from Emergency Management, his pro career intrigues me – so I believe some synergies could happen. Additionally, I get a chance to brainstorm with an extremely talented colleague from the NWS Sacramento office. I rant about “building relationships before an emergency” so I assure you that I am practicing what I preach. Love love LOVE me some Region-9!

Third week: I’ll be at Fairfield County (Ohio) Emergency Management Agency popping the G-290: Basic Public Information Officers Course and G-291: Joint Information Center / Joint Information System (JIC/JIS) courses. It will definitely be great to see my friend Director Kochis  and crews again – back in Region-5.

Fourth week: I’ll be presenting at FEMA HQ in Washington DC on social media. Yep, at the big house. OMG. This is a big presentation. Big. REALLY BIG. While at HQ, I am hoping to catch up with Lumpkins, Kamoie, FEMA’s Digital Engagement Team…and since we’re fresh off the heels of National Preparedness month grabbing a cup of coffee with my besties from ReadyGov and PrepareAthon. Love me some HQ preparedness action! Additionally, I am hoping to grab a few meetings with my friends at the Pentagon and NGA too. Special thanks to US Representative Fudge (OH-11) for some extra time with Congress and a stop at the White House. Yep. The White House. Again. #SURINDC NCAP region!

Friday talks with Ohio EMA leadership

It was great to spend some time with Ohio EMA leadership yesterday.

Discussion on community resilience, task force deployments, Presidential Declarations, key initiatives, outreach, training, EMAC deployments, stakeholder engagement, public information officer, Emergency Management visibility, social media, Public Assistance, SBA loans, documentation and reimbursements, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, Public and Private partnerships…heck-we even touched on the buzz words for 2015: Climate change and Cyber.

For sure, lots of notes!

It is so great to hear OEMA Executive Director Sima Merick passionate about all facets of Emergency Management.

Also got a chance to hang with my Ohio EMA Training and Education peeps Lisa and Susan too. Solid discussion about the upcoming Mass Fatalities course (G-386), PIO Courses (G-290), JIC/JIS Courses (G-291), Intermediate Incident Command courses (ICS-300), and the Recovery from Disasters Course (G-270.4).

Lots of good free stuff upcoming from Ohio EMA!

BTW-If you did a double take on that first picture, yes sir Sur, #AlohaFridays are made for an Aloha shirt. Period. Also a historical note, Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21, 1959.

Don’t worry peeps, look closely as I had my Ohio pin on.

Final FEMA review of the new social media courses #NDPTC

I popped back-to-back-to-back social media classes last week in Sacramento, California.

Participants from all over the west coast attended. Specifically for Thursday and Friday, FEMA reviewed our new curriculum courses. Yep, straight up evaluation. Not going to lie, I was pretty nervous.

Ongoing for course design, I will make a few more additions/changes before courses are sent to the National Training and Exercise Division (NTED) for certification. Hoping for final approval in November 2015. Hope to hear the magical words “Federally published” as my course is listed in the DHS / FEMA Training catalog. Whoa Nellie!

 For the classes? We had great interaction from all participants.

Solid discussions during the breakout sessions included professionals from all Emergency Support Functions (ESFs) as well as experts from the National Weather Service (NWS), Critical Infrastructure, and Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOADs), etc… Diverse groups make for the best discussions for sure!

As part of our continued efforts in Emergency Management, it is imperative that we address issues from the All-Hazards approach and incorporate the support of our stakeholders in solutions.

With heavy discussion, class participants had a great time engaging with others and using tools/techniques that are specific to the Preparedness, Response, Recovery, and Mitigation Directorates. Obviously, I showcased the importance of a good Public Information Officer (PIO) / Public Affairs Officer (PAO) and how their interaction in the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) or the Joint Information Center/System (JIC/JIS) is imperative to a successful emergency or disaster.

Also, starting to build an online learning library that can be easily accessed from anywhere using the #NDPTC is always good reference. Free. My favorite F-word.

Glad to be working with partners like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Domestic Preparedness Consortium (NDPC), and the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC). Truly great to see everyone working collaboratively. Thanks to the Sacramento County Emergency Management for hosting these courses.

Looking forward to the next class at the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) conference in Clark County, Nevada. See you there!

Most nervous for my August 2015

Since July was almost all planning, August will be almost all operations.

First week: I’ll be headed to FEMA Region-9 Sacramento to deliver and (hope to) certify the brand new FEMA/NDPTC Social Media presentations at the State of California’s Emergency Operations Center. This is a huge project that I have been working on in conjunction with NDPTC development and FEMA course designers. During these classes, a panel of Federal types will be evaluating…aka totes judging it. Yikes. Why am I so nervous? It’s my presentation. I created it. I designed it. It’s all me. I better not eff this up. As you know, I’m pretty passionate about my work so for sure I’m excited, but still WAY NERVOUS (rubbing my ears, whispering “FEMA-NTED-CATALOG-AUTHORED”).

Second week: I might be curled in the fetal position…most likely finalizing the California updates from the FEMA evaluation.

Third week: I’ll be doing some advanced tactical rifle “stuff” with the lads from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). As the pros say, PEW-PEW-PEW!

Fourth week: I’ll be doing my civic duty as I serve my county for jury duty. Yikes.

And the Fifth week: I’ll be headed back to OEMA in Columbus for an Advanced Event Planning Course. Hmmm, do you know of any big events upcoming in 2016?

Overall, this will likely be the most challenging month ever because of the FEMA review/certification. Gah! I hope all goes well.

Are you violating Facebook’s Terms of Service? Safety-PIO-SM-15-004

Facebook has a wide audience and many public safety agencies have taken to Facebook to promote their efforts. However, many agencies have created the wrong type of account on Facebook.

By creating your agency’s page as a person on Facebook, you are violating Facebook’s terms of service. And if you are going to ask, Facebook administration has the right to immediately delete everything. Yikes.

By registering your agency as an ORGANIZATIONAL PAGE, you can take advantage of Facebook’s analytics. This information is incredibly valuable as you evaluate who, what, at what time, and most importantly the how and why they are searching/visiting your agency’s organizational page.

Facebook readily asks if you know people and displays their basic account information. Facebook’s goal is to increase your networks by showcasing people that are similar to you. If you happen to see one of your neighboring public safety agencies who may have incorrectly registered a Facebook personal account, take the time to inform them on changing their account from a personal page to an organizational page.

Likes? As an organization, can I like other pages? Yes, as an organizational page, you can like other agencies too. Through Facebook likes, you can showcase to your trusted network of similar public safety agencies.

Remember, social media is about how you can amplify your networks and positively engage your constituents. We are constantly strengthening our relationships with similar groups – all in the name of safety.

Look, we all need to be good stewards of our public safety brand. All Emergency Support Functions (ESFs) need to constantly support each other and help agencies who need some social media guidance.

By double checking your agency and your partner agencies.

  1. You can be compliant with Facebook’s Terms of Service agreement.
  2. You can ascertain detailed visitor demographics free from Facebook’s organizational analytical information.

Time is valuable, so post good stuff.
