Social Media Day-2 at the Oklahoma State Department of Health

Strong classroom engagement yesterday with many military personnel attending including a Lieutenant Colonel. But today’s class? They are asking some serious deep social media questions too!

PostIt

Including FacebookLive! So, like any hands-on PIO instructor, I decided to grab one of them and do a live demo. Say hello to USAF OK ANG PAO Brigette Waltermire!

During the break, I was able to demo how we do the behind the scenes stuff so that the PIOs/PAOs in the audience can see how much work goes into a two-minute interview.

Special mahalos to my friend Amber for the invite to Oklahoma again.

PIO Tip: Frame your shot and reduce your onscene variables

I was finishing up my AARs and found a picture from the last night of the Republican National Convention (RNC).

Quick tip for you PIOs doing field reporting: Frame your shot.

IMG_5773

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams doing an interview with Time Magazine. Obvious chalked roadway with profane statement behind him. Videographer is recording at an upward angle to frame his subject.

During the RNC, we found that it was critical to frame the shot. Onscene shots were particularly tough because so many activist groups had signs, chalked, or painted words that are inappropriate for pictures or even worse yet, uncontrolled live broadcast hits (Periscope or FacebookLive or YouTubeLive).

Additionally, live outdoor broadcasts from the scene are challenging because it is difficult to control the natural and man-made variables.

So as PIOs we need to reduce any signs, ropes, wires, etc….that could affect your framed shot.

OnCameraDangers

Trust me, reduce the amount of variables to a bare minimum.

Focus your energy in delivering your message. #PIO

Doctoring images to incite fear = not cool #SMEM #PIO #RNCINFO #Safety-SM-16-004

Lots of BSery going on.

@TKDMike pushed this image out on 07-16-16 at 1902 EST trying to portray that Cleveland is burning dumpsters tonight for the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Orig tweet w/ image found here

That image looked weird to me.

So let’s look a little closer shall we?

A simple online search found this exact image used multiple times.

Once as a meme for protesters in the UK

zX_0CjO37DFTB_Y4tu9IRqWkGMSqCDOCBbD4aWHhobo

Made into a UK Meme

Yep. That’s weird.

Then the same image, slightly better quality found on imgur from 10 months ago.

jeNxFNG

From imgur

Again, double weird.

Then I found the original.

Game-7 from the Stanley Cup in 2011. Appropriate photo credit to Brian Neumann.

In the initial @tkdmike post from 07-16-16, he has embellished the image and added the Quicken Loans Arena logo and an RNC2016 logo to the dumpster. Additionally, behind the gal on the right is also a photoshopped sign for Trump2016. **Clearly against the orig photo by Brian CA Neumann on 06-16-2011 on Flickr. The sign should not read “Trump 2016”, it should read “Sunrise Kitchens” – also note the hockey jersey.

Doctoring images to push political agenda or incite fear = not cool.

Canada image from 2011 –> fake it to be a Cleveland image in 2016 = not cool.

It’s going to be a long NSSE.

After events in Dallas, the bomb robot was of great interest to everyone.

IMG_5014

If you take the time to understand the technology, this is an invaluable piece of equipment to any police department.

IMG_5015

Some reporters wanted to try to wear the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) suits.

IMG_5022

NBC Nightly News Correspondent Jacob Rascon even hoped on the Mounted Unit to see what it was like to ride above the crowds.

IMG_5027

Nice guy.

IMG_5026

Don’t worry, Cleveland Police’s Mounted Unit doesn’t j-walk…

IMG_5030

…like you, they use the cross walk.

Bike patrol officers from across the state including Blue Ash Police and Akron Police were out running training throughout the city.

IMG_5044

It’s great to have so many law enforcement agencies working together to ensure safety for all participants.

Additionally, lots of pros working behind the scenes making magic happen.

IMG_5029

Proud to have a so many Public Information Officers (PIOs) working together in the Cleveland Joint Information Center (JIC).

Looking forward to more fun tomorrow.

And yes, it’s t-minus 3 days…

But don’t worry, I have a whole library of examples to share – basically, what I’ve learned through experience.

One of the basic tips I talk about is RBF.

Posture is important especially since I look super small behind a podium.

Media work today with WKYC #PIO #AlohaFriday

Doing some media stuff today w/ WKYC-3 (NBC Affiliate) in Akron.

Working with WKYC Reporter Jasmine Monroe (@MONROEWKYC) and Photojournalist Carl Bachtel.

Building  relationships and strengthening partnerships are easy ways we as PIOs can enhance our partnerships before a disaster or emergency.

Quick side note: They prefer tweets, Facebook posts, and text messages more than the traditional press release.

We discussed so many other challenges PIO and media teams face including telling the truth, don’t hide from the media, and of course professional respect/courtesy on the scene. Yep. All the same things we talk about in class huh?

#ToldYouSo

And of course it’s #AlohaFriday so you know, I gotta share the Aloha spirit.

Thanks again to Jasmine, Carl, and the news team at WKYC.
